NMF: Durand Jones & The Indications, Blood Orange and more!

by Nathan Corrál

We’ve reached the final weekend of June. This month was full of stellar albums and singles marking the end of an era for some artists and the beginning for others. To close out June, the Mic Drop team chose only the best of the best for our readers. On this fine, final Friday of June, we give you a new album from Durand Jones & The Indications, singles from Blood Orange, Don Toliver and more!

Flowers by Durand Jones & The Indications

Today, Durand Jones & The Indications released their fourth studio album, Flowers. After giving fans a handful of singles like “Lover’s Holiday” and “Flower Moon,” the entire record is now ours. Over the years, the band continues to grow and explore their soulful sound nostalgic of the 70s. Their new record beautifully blends lush strings, laid back drums, warms bass and soft synths and keys. All of this is topped off with the remarkable vocals of lead singer Durand Jones as well as drummer Aaron Frazer. If Durand Jones & The Indications is not on your radar, we definitely recommend giving them a listen.

“The Field” by Blood Orange featuring The Durutti Column, Tariq Al-Sabir, Caroline Polacheck & Daniel Caesar

Singer, songwriter, composer and producer Dev Hynes aka Blood Orange rallied some of the most esteemed names in music for their new collaboration “The Field.” This is Blood Orange’s first release in three years. The ethereal and soulful vocals from Polacheck and Ceaser grace an orchestral arrangement and drum loop. The track is dreamy and transcendent, lifting listeners into the clouds. One can only hope that a new Blood Orange record is near.

“Just Breathe” by Auracle

In case you missed yesterday’s feature on the Bass n Babes compilation album, we included some of the tracks on this week’s New Music Friday. First, we chose “Just Breathe” by Auracle. This bass heavy track is hypnotic and mysterious. The mystifying lyrics will lure in listeners and hold their attention until the song’s end and they are left wanting more.

“Love Him” by Lex Looper

Next, DJ and producer Lex Looper brings the heat on “Love Him.” The track roars with grimy basslines and aggressive drums. Lex Looper dominates with their impeccable production and attention grabbing vocals that whisper over the UK Garage inspired track.

“Menace Beach” by Bunny G

Closing out our picks from the Bass N Babes Compilation is Bunny G’s “Menace Beach.” This standout track is full of energetic club energy. The fast paced production and pulsating drums immediately makes this the perfect track for the dancefloor. It’s heavy, yet dreamy. If you haven’t checked out yesterday’s feature on this amazing compilation, check it out here. Stream Bass n Babes Volume I!

“FWU” by Don Toliver

Don Toliver dropped a brand new banger “FWU.” The rapper spits bars over a signature Mustard bass line. This is one you want to play on full blast, windows down, driving in the sun. “FWU” stands out as one of Toliver’s edgier tracks. It’s bouncy and sleek; what Toliver does best.

“Ain’t It Nice” by Madison McFerrin

“Ain’t It Nice” by Madison McFerrin brings this week’s New Music Friday to a close. The Neo-Soul track brings smooth and sultry vibes perfect for a summer night. The singer’s soft vocals are layered over a groovy bass, soft drum and vibrant synth.

We hope your June was full of good tunes and even better memories. We’ll be back with a whole batch of new tracks to welcome July!
