A packed night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles delivered a mix of major wins, first-time moments, and performances spanning generations.
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards turned Los Angeles into a meeting point for pop royalty, rising stars, and some of music’s most recognizable names on Sunday, Sept. 27. Hosted by Snoop Dogg at the Peacock Theater, the ceremony brought together a lineup that included Madonna, Taylor Swift, Lisa, RAYE, Shaboozey, Gunna, Sienna Spiro, Yung Lean and GENER8ION.

Madonna entered the night with a leading 13 nominations and finished as its biggest winner with seven Moon Person trophies. Taylor Swift also made VMA history, while Nirvana received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. The night mixed current chart success with tributes to two recently lost music icons, Dolly Parton and George Michael.
Madonna Owns the Night
Madonna’s seven wins included Artist of the Year, Best Dance for “Confessions II – The Film,” and Best Collaboration for “Bring Your Love,” her track with Sabrina Carpenter. She also received additional awards tied to the long-form project, giving her the highest total of the night.
Her opening performance made the evening even more notable. Madonna returned to the VMAs stage for the first time since 2003, performing “Bring Your Love” with Carpenter before moving into “Danceteria Afterhours” with Charli XCX. The appearance marked Madonna’s fifth time opening the VMAs, a new record for the ceremony.

The performance also connected the 2026 show to Madonna’s VMA history. She appeared at the very first ceremony in 1984, and more than four decades later, she was back at the center of the broadcast as both a performer and one of its major award recipients.
Taylor Swift Makes VMA History
Taylor Swift had a major night of her own. Her “The Fate of Ophelia” video won Video of the Year, the ceremony’s top award, and she picked up Best Direction for “Opalite.” She also received the inaugural Artist Director Honors, recognizing her work behind the camera on music videos.
With her three competitive wins, Swift reached 33 career VMAs, moving past Beyoncé’s previous record of 30. She dedicated her Video of the Year win to Dolly Parton, who died in August at age 80.

Swift also used the ceremony to premiere the video for “Patient Zero,” starring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell. The visual was directed by Swift and debuted during the broadcast, adding another chapter to her work behind the camera.
New Faces and Major Performances
The 2026 ceremony also gave several artists major VMA moments. Lisa won Best Pop for “Dream,” featuring Kentaro Sakaguchi, while Sienna Spiro took home Best New Artist. BTS won Best Group, and Ariana Grande’s “hate that i made you love me” won Song of Summer.

Lisa also performed her new single “SaWaDiKa,” marking the television debut of the song ahead of her upcoming EP PRESS PLAY. Shaboozey and Gunna teamed up for “High Noon,” while Yung Lean and GENER8ION performed “STORM II.” RAYE made her VMAs performance debut as part of the night’s lineup.
The ceremony also looked back through two emotional tribute performances. Kacey Musgraves honored Dolly Parton with “I Will Always Love You,” while RAYE, Sombr, and Teddy Swims joined Adam Lambert and others for a tribute to George Michael.
Nirvana’s Video Vanguard Moment
Nirvana received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, with surviving members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear taking the stage. The honor recognized the band’s lasting influence on music videos and popular culture, while the ceremony also included a performance connected to the band and Kurt Cobain’s legacy.

The ceremony also posted its strongest television audience in more than a decade. The 2026 VMAs drew 8.43 million viewers across CBS and its MTV simulcast, making it the most-watched edition since 2015. The audience figure gave the show another notable milestone alongside its awards and performances.
The 2026 VMAs brought together current pop stars, established legends, breakthrough artists, and tributes to music history. Madonna’s seven-win night, Swift’s new VMA record, Lisa and Spiro’s wins, and the tributes to Parton and Michael gave the ceremony plenty of memorable moments. For a show built around music videos, the 2026 VMAs kept the artists and visuals at the center of the night.
