Scottish trio CHVRCHES have announced their first album in six years. All The King’s Men follows the band’s 2021 Screen Violence. Their last era introduced the band’s moodiest and darkest sound to date. Robert Smith lended his vocals on “How To Not Drown,” one of the lead singles off the album.
Shortly before the news of All The King’s Men, CHVRCHES announced two special performances in their hometown of Glasgow and in London taking place in October. Both shows are charity events benefiting North London Action for the Homeless and Step Down Glasgow. In addition to the September shows, the band announced an intimate show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles taking place on November 16th. New shows mean new music. Along with the live dates came the lead single off All The King’s Men, “Roses.”
Roses
On their brand new single “Roses,” CHVRCHES launch their first new album cycle in six years. Over their decade-long career, front woman Lauren Mayberry has always been outspoken lyrically. She writes about her womanhood, her experiences in the music industry, and worldwide political issues. “Roses” showcases Mayberry’s skilled lyricism.
Mayberry sings of the mistakes that society continues to repeat while pretending that everything used to be better. The track is quite pessimistic suggesting that history is repeating itself rather than changing for the better. Sonically the track features a heavy industrial sound with hard hitting drums and anthemic vocals. The chorus draws listener’s attention to the nursery rhyme Ring a Ring o’ Roses adding to the song’s theme of collapse. The chant-like chorus is catchy, staying with listeners after the song is over.
All The King’s Men
Due on January 22, CHVRCHES will release their fifth studio album All The King’s Men.This project is said to be the band’s darkest project to date. Screen Violence debuted the band’s darker sonic direction. All The King’s Men will continue this journey with eleven brand new songs. On this album, the band finds themselves with a more guitar driven sound with indie rock and industrial textures. The new sonic directions will be accompanied by the trio’s signature synth-pop, electronic sound that fans know and love
When the trio announced their brand new album, they also gave fans another surprise. The second single from All The King’s Men, “Overthinker,” will be released Tuesday October 27th. Based on the snippet from the band’s socials, “Overthinker” sounds softer and lighter, reminiscent of the sonic direction on Screen Violence. The new sonic direction CHVRCHES is taking is the most ambitious yet creating a buzz and excitement from long time fans.
