Mariah Carey Announces New Single and Hints at New Album

by Nathan Corrál

Global superstar, Mariah Carey, took to social media this week to announce her long awaited return to music. Her brand new single, “Type Dangerous,” out on Friday, June 6th marks her first release since her 2018 album Caution. Fans all over, myself included, were full of excitement when we saw the post this week.

What has Carey been up to since her last album dropped? Starting with the obvious, she’s been in the studio working on new music. The singer was featured on Ariana Grande’s “Yes, And?” remix in 2024. She has also kept up her Christmas tradition of ringing in the holidays, playing sold out shows.

Recently, the star celebrated the 20th anniversary of her tenth studio album, The Emancipation of Mimi. Many fans and critics claim that this record is Carey’s best to date. It’s full of hits like “We Belong Together,” “Its Like That” and “Shake It Off.” Carey played a handful of anniversary shows and released a deluxe version of the record featuring bonus songs, remixes and more. She is still currently on her “Celebration of Mimi” Tour with shows scheduled in Asia and London. It is safe to say that Mariah Carey has continued to live out her pop star life, despite not having new music to promote.

“Type Dangerous”

Alas, the time has finally come when the world will finally have new music from Mariah Carey. The clip appeared to be full of easter eggs and hints at a new record.

In the cryptic clip, Carey is seen stepping into a car. When she turns on the radio, her hit “Its Like That” begins to play. She skips the song which leads into what can only be a snippet of “Type Dangerous.” Fans are speculating that her new era will channel elements and sounds from her The Emancipation of Mimi era. This began the subtle teasing of new music leading to a longer snippet. The post was followed by a clip of Mariah driving in the same car. Visually, the clips appear to depict her in a mysterious setting creating a feeling of danger, matching the song’s name.

Yesterday, fans were given another snippet. This time Carey sings the track’s title. Sonically, the song draws inspiration from older styles of R&B, but Carey puts a fresh spin adding her signature touch and style.

What sparked even more buzz is the license plate on the car that Carey drives read “MC16.” If this doesn’t mean fans are getting a new Mariah Carey album, I don’t know what does.

“Type Dangerous” will be out on all streaming platforms tomorrow. Are you excited for new Mariah?
