Locals Only: Felly at The Echo

by Nathan Corrál

As we near the end of the year, many artists are on the final stretches of their tours. That means there is constantly a handful of shows to choose from each night, especially in LA. Last night, I was back at The Echo for another show.

A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of interviewing singer-songwriter and producer Felly. The artist is currently in the middle of his North American tour in support of his new album Ambroxyde. In case you missed our conversation, check it out here.

Thursday night brought a room full of Felly fans to Echo Park’s beloved venue, The Echo. Playing LA is always a special night, but this tour as a whole has been a special one for Felly.

New Sounds

On Ambroxyde, Felly ventures out from his signature hip-hop song and explores a brand new sonic territory. He fully emerges himself in the indie rock sound he grew up listening to. Over time, we’ve seen many artists take chances with a new sonic direction. Some master it while others fall short. In Felly’s case, he masterfully reinvents himself on Ambroxyde

During our chat, the singer told me that Ambroxyde was the album he always wanted to make. The indie rock sound fits him quite well. From start to finish, Felly takes listeners on a sonic journey. Many of the tracks reflect the locations of where they were recorded. To make a jump from one genre, to a very different one and to do it so well is impressive to say the least.

While making the album, Felly stepped out of his comfort zone, leaving the familiarity of making music alone on his laptop, and brought in a full band to record the new songs. Bringing these songs to life on stage with his band has been quite the experience for Felly. After our chat, I was eager to catch him live in LA.

Thursday Night at The Echo

Currently in the middle of his tour, Felly finally made his way to LA. He had mentioned to me that LA is always one of his favorite places to play because of the people and all the love that fills the room. I can attest that everyone brought their love and support to his show on Thursday night.

With a new sonic direction, I asked Felly what the setlist would look like. After he told me it would be a blend of fan favorites and tracks from Ambroxyde, I was eager to see what sort of energy the show brought. When Felly played songs from his early days, fans went crazy, singing all the words and dancing to the music. The energy from the crowd was infectious. Felly and his band played off of that the entire night. When it came time for the new tracks, the crowd brought the same energy and enthusiasm.

It was quite special to see such a loyal fan base appreciate music from each and every era Felly has created.
