Timeless Tuesday Episode 016
This week’s selections feel like a rollercoaster ride through heartbreak, healing, and heat.
Every track carries emotional weight—whether it whispers or roars. Let’s break it down, one unforgettable song at a time. Welcome back to Timeless Tuesday 016!
Nathan’s Selections:
“Teardrops” – Womack & Womack (1998)
First up, is “Teardrops” by Womack & Womack. This is the kind of track that makes your chest feel full, even while your feet won’t stop moving. “Teardrops” lands with that perfect bittersweet groove—its rhythm is undeniable, pulling you into a two-step while the lyrics quietly gut you.
“Sunrise” – Simply Red (2003)
Then, Nathan brings “Sunrise,” which enters smoothly, warm, and just a little smug. “Sunrise” features a legendary intro lifted from Hall & Oates’ “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do),” but it’s reinvented with sensuality. While the sample instantly gives it nostalgic roots, the track immediately feels like golden hour in audio form.

“Joey” – Concrete Blonde (1990)
Finally, Nathan introduces us to a name-titled love ballad that lands like a whispered apology after a heart-wrenching storm. “Joey” aches with vulnerability, where every note carries the weight of regret and old love. The emotional pull is raw and unfiltered, reaching deep into that in-between space where you’re still in love, but learning to let go. Concrete Blonde absolutely delivers.
Cheyenne’s Selections:
“Livin’ on a Prayer – Bon Jovi (1986)
First on Cheyenne’s list, is Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer.” Few songs carry the same stadium-sized spirit as this one. “Livin’ on a Prayer” is more than a rock anthem—it’s a lifeline for anyone who’s ever needed to push through when it feels like the world is against you. Whether you’re at a dive bar or in your car, it feels like a fight song that never goes out of style.
“Sexy Back” – Justin Timberlake (2006)
Speaking of stadium, Cheyenne’s second pick is a song that feels like dancing in front of a stadium audience. This track marked a pop culture moment—the return of JT in full, futuristic Y2K form. “SexyBack” is a genuine club hit and time capsule that drips in confidence and swag. With Timbaland’s unmistakable production and Justin’s edgy falsetto, this song owned the 2000s. Even now, it still slaps—and still makes you want to catwalk whenever you hear it. How could we not include this one?
“Second Hand News” – Fleetwood Mac (1977)
Next up, Fleetwood Mac brings the heat and they don’t ease you in—they throw you straight into the fire. “Second Hand News” bounces in with chaotic charm and jangly acoustic guitars. Lindsey Buckingham gives us sarcasm, unresolved hurt, and raw personality all at once. It’s the sonic equivalent of saying you’re fine when you’re clearly not—and doing it with a grin. Cancer energy fueling the season…

My Selections:
“Slick Talkin'” – Slick Rick & Outkast (2002)
My set this week begins with, “Slick Talkin'” by Slick Rick and Outkast. When two lyrical titans like Slick Rick and OutKast collide, the result is undeniable. “Slick Talkin’” is a masterclass in wordplay, rhythm, and swag—laid over a beat that demands your full attention (those whistles get me every time). Every verse feels carefully sculpted, yet effortlessly cool. It’s the perfect reminder of how playful, sharp, and intelligent hip-hop can be when legends step up and trade bars. This record is one of my top 10 hip-hop legendary anthems.
“We Gonna Take You Back (Lude/Don’t Leave Me)” – Blackstreet (1994)
Next, “We Gonna Take You Back” drips with ’90s R&B soul and longing. “Don’t leave me girl” is the kind of snippet of a slow jam that wraps around you like a memory you forgot you missed. Once you’re hooked, you won’t stop hearing this Blackstreet harmony. The harmonies at the end are everything—delicate yet rich, echoing the emotional intensity of a plea for love not to walk away. It’s no surprise this track has been sampled countless times—it’s iconic, heartfelt, and undeniably timeless.
“Happy” – Surface (1986)
Lastly, I selected “Happy” by Surface. “Happy” lives up to its name, but it doesn’t come off forced or overly sweet. It glows with genuine joy—the kind that comes from knowing exactly who you are and what love means to you. There’s something about the melody and vocals that feels like sun streaming through your window after a long night. It’s feel-good R&B at its finest: romantic, reassuring, and always ready to uplift.
