It’s What We’re Listening to Wednesday and you know what that means—another round of music that’s been living in our heads rent-free all week. From throwback funk to lush synth-pop and underground gems, this week’s playlist is full of groove, emotion, and unexpected turns. Let’s get listening.
My Selects
Track One – “SpottieOttieDopaliscious” – Outkast
Let’s kick it off with a classic: Outkast’s “SpottieOttieDopaliscious.” This track feels like summer heat in slow motion—brassy, poetic, and hypnotically cool. The spoken-word verses unfold like a hazy memory, layered over mellow horns that practically sweat with nostalgia. It’s a reminder that not every banger needs a beat drop. We also featured this track in Laneisha’s latest edition of Timeless Tuesdays, check it out for more timeless classics that we’re listening to.
Track Two – “Image” – Magdalena Bay
“Image” feels like drifting through a digital dreamscape. It’s playful and disorienting in the best way, with glossy synths and chopped-up production that toys with perception. It’s pop, but glitchy and warped—like a mirror that won’t stop melting. The result is just plain addicting. Can’t stop listening!
Track Three – “Subway Car” – Marc E. Bassy
“Subway Car” by Marc E. Bassy is a mood in motion. It’s the kind of track that wraps you in a warm, lo-fi blanket while still keeping your head nodding. The production is intimate and textured, and Bassy’s vocals ride the beat with ease. It’s romantic, a little melancholic, and perfect for zoning out on your morning commute.
Nathan’s Selects
Track Four – “magic” – strongboi
Strongboi’s “Magic” is exactly that, pure magic. This track feels effortlessly cool, combining a wobbly bassline with hushed vocals and woozy melodies. There’s something disarmingly playful in the way it unfolds, like a dreamy jam session you never want to end.
Track Five – “Party People” – Rose Gray
“Party People” by Rose Gray is straight-up festival fuel. It’s got that old-school rave energy with a modern twist, pulsing beats, strobe-light synths, and Gray’s commanding voice bringing it all together. It’s giving club night nostalgia in the best way.
Track Six – “temperatura” – saint hills
Rounding out Nathan’s picks is “temperatura” by saint hills. This one’s smooth, sultry, and a little mysterious. The rhythm is gentle but addictive, with a subtle reggaetón influence that never overpowers the track’s emotional undercurrent. It’s one of those songs that sneaks up on you and then stays stuck in your head all day. We also LOVE the Sean Paul sample, obviously.
Laneisha’s Selects
Track Seven – “Why Why Why Why Why” – SAULT
This track walks the line between groove and grit. It’s packed with percussion and urgency, but still leaves room for softness in the vocals. SAULT’s always been good at making music that moves both your body and your brain, and this one hits that balance perfectly.
Track Eight – “Red Lights” – SAULT
Slower and more stripped back than the last, “Red Lights” leans into minimalism. The mood is hazy and introspective, with haunting background vocals and just enough space to let everything breathe. It’s subtle, but it gets under your skin in the best way.
Track Nine – “Nothing to Me” – Snoh Aalegra
Laneisha closes us out with a Snoh Aalegra track. Snoh’s voice is pure velvet, and “Nothing to Me” shows it off in full. The instrumentation is delicate and just enough to hold her voice up without getting in the way. It’s emotional, understated, and exactly the kind of track you reach for when you’re in your feelings.
That’s a wrap for this week’s rotation. As always, throw these tracks on your playlist, share ‘em with a friend, and let us know what you’re spinning. Catch you next Wednesday—same time, same vibes.
