My Selections:

“Genie In a Bottle” – Christina Aguilera (1999)

If Bratz dolls came to life, Christina Aguilera would be the fearless ringleader. My first selection, “Genie In a Bottle,” marked Aguilera’s explosive debut into the scene. The record drips with her signature swag, effortlessly blending pop and soul to create a masterpiece. Beyond its catchy melody and danceable beat, the song makes a bold statement about setting boundaries and owning one’s desires. Christina wasn’t just asking to be treated right—she was demanding it. And honestly, we love a pop star with standards. Talk about boundaries and self-respect.

“Got ‘Til It’s Gone” – Janet Jackson, Q-Tip & Joni Mitchell (1997)

Next up, I selected “Got ‘Til It’s Gone” by Janet Jackson, Q-Tip and Joni Mitchell. First of all, we must acknowledge this powerhouse lineup in the track with Jackson, Tip, and Mitchell. With Janet’s silky vocals, Q-Tip’s laid-back flow, and Joni Mitchell’s iconic sample, “Got ‘Til It’s Gone” serves both as a groove and timeless life lesson. The track represents a beautiful reminder: don’t take anything—or anyone—for granted. While that message always hits home, it’s the synergy of these three legends that makes the song truly unforgettable—an immediate addition to our Timeless Tuesday playlist.

“How Do I Breathe” – Mario (2007)

Finally, my last selection comes from our Great Recession era of 2007-2009. Although the recession was a difficult time of economic turmoil for our nation, one could argue that this was a time of expansive musical brilliance. “How Do I Breathe” by Mario encapsulates that raw emotion, giving us a heartbreak anthem full of vulnerability and rich R&B vocals. In all honesty, we need more love songs like this one today. They don’t make ‘em like this no more!

Cheyenne’s Selections:

“SpottieOttieDopaliscious” – Outkast (1998)

First up, Cheyenne selects “SpottieOttieDopaliscious” by Outkast, released in 1998. Outkast has earned their well-deserved reputation on our Timeless Tuesday playlist because they were creating legendary soundscapes unlike any other. Their iconic funky down-south Atlanta sound, southern twang within their vocal raps, and groovy psychedelic hip-hop beats are irreplaceable. “SpottieOttieDopaliscious” is another one of their classics from their third studio album, Aquemini. This record transports listeners to an unforgettable groove-filled psychedelic trip, and we’re so here for it.

“Hypnotize” – The Notorious B.I.G. (1997)

Last week, we featured The Notorious B.I.G.’s lovely counterpart Faith Evans, but this week it’s Biggie’s turn. Cheyenne honors the King of New York himself with, “Hypnotize.” Biggie is arguably one of the biggest influences and trailblazers in the hip-hop community. His effortless flow, lyrical genius, heavy beats and magnetic hook is unforgettable. “Hypnotize” is a legendary classic that, without a doubt, belongs in Episode 015. Rest in paradise, Biggie, we hope you can hear us up there endlessly appreciating your legacy.

“I’m Coming Out” – Diana Ross (1980)

Finally, Cheyenne closes out with “I’m Coming Out” performed by longtime LGBT icon and ally, Diana Ross. Throughout her career, she has paid her respects and shown her support through performing at various LGBTQ+ Pride events and participating in fundraisers. Over the years, the queer disco anthem has become a symbol of self-expression and liberation for the LGBTQ+ community. Happy Pride month to all of those that are out, and especially those that aren’t just yet. You are seen, you are loved, and you are never alone.

Nathan’s selections:

“Flesh For Fantasy” – Billy Idol (1984)

Nathan’s first selection this week is Billy Idol’s “Flesh For Fantasy. Our Timeless Tuesday playlist features many new wave, post-punk rock songs and we cannot get enough. Catch a vibe with “Flesh For Fantasy.” Billy Idol sets the tone for a sultry night with a lover, dripping with hot, steamy vocals and a laid-back synth-driven rhythm that undeniably sets the mood.

“Think of Me” – Madonna (1983)

Sticking with the theme of hot, steamy, and sultry: Nathan selects Madonna’s “Think of Me.” The playlist this week features strong female leads, encouraging empowerment and not settling for less. Madonna is an absolute diva and expresses that clearly in this record, with the proper amount of sass and confidence. “Think of Me” is the perfect revenge track for a lover that did not know what they had, until it was long gone. Maybe it’s a threat, or a warning. Either way, it’s a no-brainer that our playlist needed some iconic diva spirit from the queen herself.

“Always and Forever” – Heatwave (1997)

Lastly, Nathan finishes Episode 015 strong with “Always and Forever” by Heatwave. A certified classic, earning platinum recognition globally, “Always and Forever” is a record that is perfect for a slow dance moment. Heatwave takes listeners on a journey of ageless love with this ballad, expressing an unconditional infinite love for their lucky partner. Slow jams never go out of style.
