Timeless Tuesday: Episode 005

Welcome back, Mic Drop Family! It’s time for another edition of Timeless Tuesday—Episode 005. This week, we’re diving into timeless classics that have captivated hearts across generations. From viral TikTok sounds to iconic movie soundtracks, these tracks are more relevant than ever.

Let’s get into it.

Cheyenne’s Selections:

“Oogum Boogum Song” – Brenton Wood (1967)

Cheyenne kicks things off with two tracks that have taken over TikTok’s “For You Page” (FYP) worldwide. First up, she handpicked the playful and upbeat “Oogum Boogum Song” by Brenton Wood. It delivers a feel-good energy that’s perfect for powering through your week.

“Sun Is Shining” – Bob Marley & The Wailers (1978)

Next, Cheyenne brings us some sunshine with Bob Marley & The Wailers’ “Sun Is Shining.” As spring blends into summer, this track offers the perfect laid-back vibes. Marley’s voice transports us to the islands, and the band’s signature reggae rhythm brings instant relaxation.

Both “Sun Is Shining” and “Oogum Boogum Song” have been rediscovered by a new generation through TikTok audios—proof that good music never dies. Classics like these continue to resonate, no matter how much time passes.

“Memphis Monday Morning” – Bobby “Blue” Bland (1998)

To wrap up her list, Cheyenne slows the tempo with “Memphis Monday Morning” by Bobby “Blue” Bland. This smooth blend of blues and piano melodies offers a breath of fresh Memphis soul. It’s a mellow track that fits right into our Timeless Tuesday playlist.

Laneisha’s Selections:

“All Night Long” – Mary Jane Girls (1983)

My first selection this week goes to “All Night Long” by the Mary Jane Girls—a funky anthem straight from the golden era of groove. Produced by the legendary Rick James, this track captures the essence of the early ’80s. Rick James helped shape the sound of a generation, working with legends like The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, and even Eddie Murphy.

“All Night Long” continues to influence artists today, with samples appearing in songs by Ice Cube, Mary J. Blige, Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, Jay-Z, and many more. My favorite? LL Cool J’s “Around The Way Girl,” which puts a fresh spin on the original.

“Baby Come Back” – Player (1977)

Next, I chose “Baby Come Back” by Player. This classic reigns from the British-American rock band’s debut self-titled album, Player. This soft rock gem topped the charts for weeks after its debut and still pops up in pop culture. Remember that hilarious scene in Transformers when Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) tries to win over Mikaela (Megan Fox)? Yep, “Baby Come Back” played in the background, blasting from his alien car stereo.

That scene always comes to mind when this track plays—how about you?

“Feeling Good” – Nina Simone (1965)

Lastly on my list, I picked “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone. Originally written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse for the musical The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd, this song has theatrical roots. No wonder it feels so dramatic and soulful.

Simone’s version, recorded in 1965 and produced by Hal Mooney, has become the definitive take. Her rendition has been sampled and remixed many times—our top pick is the Austin Millz remix, which gives it a fresh electronic twist while honoring the original.
