Lord Finesse

Today, we’re highlighting Lord Finesse, a legendary rapper and producer from the Bronx, New York. His influence has echoed throughout some of the greatest eras in rap music. Starting his rap journey at just 12 years old, he quickly became immersed in the world of music. As his passion grew, so did his skills. Before stepping into production, he formed the renowned New York underground group, Diggin’ In The Crates (D.T.I.C.), alongside Showbiz, A.G., Diamond D, Fat Joe, O.C., Buckwild, and Big L.

Eventually, Finesse expanded into production, leaving his mark on The Notorious B.I.G.’s debut album, Ready To Die, by producing the track, “Suicidal Thoughts.” Building on this momentum, he later self-produced his entire album, The Awakening, featuring standout tracks and some of our favorites, “True and Livin’” and “Hip 2 Da Game.”

In the video below, Lord Finesse himself breaks down the creative process behind “True and Livin’,” As Artists, we love witnessing those behind-the-scenes moments where the musical expression unfolds. Don’t miss it–watch below!

“Hip 2 Da Game” – Lord Finesse

Speaking of “Hip 2 Da Game,” this track remains an undeniable classic, beloved by fans worldwide. However, when it comes to sampling, artists must ensure they properly credit the original creators.

Exhibit A: Mac Miller’s “Kool Aid and Frozen Pizza” (RIP).

Released in 2011, “Kool Aid and Frozen Pizza” became an anthem for many listeners worldwide, while also serving as the introduction to Mac Miller’s music for some. While the track was widely celebrated, Finesse took legal action in 2012, filing a $10 million lawsuit for unauthorized use of “Hip 2 Da Game.” The case was ultimately settled in 2013 for an undisclosed amount— phew, what a ride. 😮‍💨

Beyond his own catalog, Lord Finesse’s legacy extends far beyond his personal discography. His work continues to inspire generations of artists, ensuring that these timeless classics remain a staple in hip-hop history. Watch the music video for “Hip 2 Da Game” below.

“Rock With You” – Michael Jackson (1979)

Switching gears to another timeless hit, “Rock With You” by the legendary Michael Jackson remains a cornerstone of pop music history. This classic dominated the charts and helped shape the musical landscape of the 1980s.

Throughout his iconic and groundbreaking career, Jackson continuously evolved, solidifying his title as “The King of Pop.” Tracks like this paved the way for his lasting influence, proving why his music remains just as impactful today as it was decades ago.
