Olivia Rodrigo Slays With New Song ‘Vampire’

She did it again! American singer-songwriter and actress Olivia Rodrigo released her new single “vampire” on June 30th, along with a music video. To no one’s surprise, it is currently number one on trending for music on YouTube. As a fan, I wanted to talk about my favorite parts of the song, the music video, and fan theories. I was one of those people who listened to “drivers license” on an hour loop. This song might be the next one I play on repeat, as long as it doesn’t get overplayed on the radio. I hope you are prepared with garlic and stakes because we’re going vampire hunting!

Musicality

The song starts with a somber piano melody, making it seem like it will be a ballad. I like how the chords are more complex than “deja vu,” which only uses D major and A major. When it comes to Rodrigo’s singing, she has evolved since Sour. Her belting on, “The way you sold me for parts as you sunk your teeth into me,” impressed me, as she usually goes for a lighter head voice similar to Billie Eilish. The song starts to pick up in the second verse, as a bass drum beat is added and the piano speeds up. It keeps the energy until the song’s ending, which features an electric guitar and an energetic drum beat.

Video

The video begins with a shot of a lake with fireflies. It then pans up to the moon as it cuts to Rodrigo singing while lying on the grass nearby. As the chorus ends with the word “vampire,” a stage light knocks her out, and it is revealed that she is singing at an awards show. When she comes to, her arm is bleeding, and the audience looks at her in shock. She tries to keep singing while the stage is on fire but is stopped by the police. She runs away with the police in pursuit carrying flashlights. The video ends with her near a freeway, seemingly floating in the air as she sings, “bleedin’ me dry like a goddamn vampire.”

Fans’ Thoughts and Theories

When it comes to the song’s sound, people think it sounds like “See You Again” by Miley Cyrus. I agree, but it’s unique enough that she didn’t steal it. The fans support the song and are trying to keep it #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, with Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” inching up to Rodrigo. But before the song was out, fan theories circulated the internet. Some people speculated that the purple band-aids represented the Sour album covering the red bite marks that would symbolize her sophomore album, GUTS. As she posted more pictures with red lipstick and strawberries, fans thought the next album would be red-themed.

The New Album

I can’t wait for GUTS to come out! But sadly, we have to wait until September 8th for the full album. I think this song was an excellent preview for the new album. People speculate that Conan Gray and Sabrina Carpenter will be featured on the album, but we have yet to see. If she goes on tour again, I hope I can secure tickets this time. Who knew the Sour Tour would sell out within minutes of Ticketmaster’s presale? I will go pre-save GUTS now, but I had fun writing for you all these past few months. Bye for now!
