New Music Friday: Little Simz, Coco Jones and More!

by Nathan Corrál

As the month of March comes to an end, the roll out of new tunes refuses to slow down. This week’s round up has it all: singles from Coco Jones and Little Simz, an EP from Wallows and a few full length albums. We hope you enjoy!

“You” by Coco Jones

R&B singer Coco Jones dives deep into her soul on “You.” The song is the fourth single from her upcoming album Why Not More? On “You,” the singer’s story telling shines through her heartfelt lyrics. Her soulful singing strikes a heart string so good that anyone can relate to her longing for a lover. Coco Jones is criminally underrated, and “You” is another addition to her incredible discography.

“Blue” by Chezile

Singer songwriter Chezile a stunning slow jam. “Blue” showcases the musician’s ability to seamlessly fuse jazz, soul. Chezile’s vocal’s harmonizer and reverb creating a dreamy effect. Sonically the track perfectly matches the song’s lyrics about feeling “blue.” The singer is clearly heartbroken and he expresses that feeling so beautifully. The song is soft and smooth. It is love at first listen.

“Free” by Little Simz

Boundary breaking musician Little Simz has released a brand new single from her upcoming record Lotus. “Free” lyrically feels like an anthem for the power of love. Little Simz spits bar after bar in the verse singing about where she feels free the most. When the dreamy chorus hits, male vocals transport the listener to another world. Sonically a soft strum from an acoustic guitar and a beautiful orchestral arrangement to create an unforgettable love song. If Marvin Gaye and Lauryn Hill made a song together, it would undoubtedly sound like “Free.”

“Deep Dive” by Wallows

Alternative rock band Wallows have released a brand new EP More. The song that stood out on this killer project was “Deep Dive.” On this track, the trio slows things down a bit. The band cleverly blends indie rock and alternative pop to create their signature sound. “Deep Dive” is a promise to a lover to never let them down expressed through the metaphor of the ocean. It’s quite romantic and easy to dance to. Wallows outdid themselves with this song as well as the entire EP.

Earthstar Mountain by Hannah Cohen

Earthstar Mountain is the brand new album from indie, singer songwriter Hannah Cohen. Undeniably a beautiful record from start to finish, one song in particular had my heart. “Mountain” is a captivating love song that oozes the influences of Fleetwood Mac. Cohen’s vocals grace over a soft guitar and steady drum. “Mountain” is the kind of song to blast in the car while the sun sets on a warm spring evening. Hannanh Cohen truly outdid herself on Earthstar Mountain.

For You by Yukimi

Little Dragon leader singer, Yukimi has given fans her first full length solo record. On For You, Yukini showcases an intimate side to herself on songs like “Sad Makeup” and “Make Me Whole.” Fans love the groovy, dance music from Little Dragon, but on this record, Yukimi captivates listeners with her exploration of sound and songwriting. If you haven’t yet, check out this record.
