Recently, Mic Drop sat down with one of our favorite guests, Polartropica. The last time we talked to her was back in May. The singer shared with us who inspires her visually and sonically. Since our chat, we’ve kept our eye on her patiently awaiting her next release. Over the years she’s crafted a dreamy surf, rock sound beloved by many. As all great artists do, Polartropica found herself exploring a fresh genre, a new sonic playground for her to live in.
“Shiny Things” is a brand new collaboration between Polartropica and Gilbert Louie Ray. The LA based singer sat down with Mic Drop for an exclusive preview of the song and music video.
Shiny Things
“Shiny Things” stands out in Polartropica’s discography marking her first project with Country Americana influences. Prior to the new release, the singer found herself more in an electric sound, but slowly she began gravitating towards and carving more organic sounds. As a kid, she grew up listening to John Denver, an artist her dad was extremely fond of.

The song was co-written by Polartropica and Gilbert Louie Ray in a studio in Atwater Village. The two met for the first time at the studio marking the birth place and new direction of the Americana inspired sound. With a new sonic direction, the singer shared with us that she’d like to make acoustic, stripped down versions of some of her previous releases. As much as she loves the electronic sound and synths, the time has finally come to explore a new sonic playground.
Waiting for Gilbert to arrive at a writing session, Polartropica began to write what is now “Shiny Things.” The track was inspired by a relationship Gilbert had recently told Polartropica about. She could relate to what he shared with her about a relationship that had fallen apart a handful of times. Essentially the song is about forgiving yourself as well as the other person in a relationship while loving and cherishing the good times.
Music Video In The Salton Sea
Along with the single is a stunning music video that was shot out at The Salton Sea. Directed by Tristan Pelletier, the remnants of what was once a gorgeous lake serve as the backdrop for the music video. This setting echoes the song’s theme of cherishing the good moments in a relationship. The visuals are truly captivating. Everything perfectly came together for the team to create a stunning visual aid for the song.
