Five New Albums To Add To Your Queue

Are you tired of that same old Spotify playlist? Looking to spice up your Apple Music? Whatever streaming platform you may prefer, there’s plenty of recently released albums that should definitely be in your queue. From folk to alternative to jazz, there’s a little bit of everything here for all of your music tastes.

Javelin – Sufjan Stevens

Javelin was released on October 6th, and along with it came a heart-wrenching dedication. In an Instagram post made on the same day, Sufjan Stevens came out publicly. He announced that Javelin was dedicated to his late partner Evans Richardson. Javelin, as Sufjan explained, is the product of love intertwined with life; the presence of beauty within intimacy.

Sufjan’s folksy instrumentals are combined with heartfelt lyrics to produce an album that feels like we’re right there with him, feeling the rollercoaster of emotion that comes when you’ve dedicated yourself to someone. Full of love, Javelin is the perfect album for all of your feels.

Yard – Slow Pulp

Slow Pulp is an indie rock band based in Chicago. Yard, their second studio album, was released on September 29th. Yard is the perfect combination of indie rock and bedroom pop. From rock anthems to slower, more subtle tracks, there’s a little bit of everything in Yard.

Emily Massey’s low yet tender vocals, in combination with the rock instrumentals of the rest of the band, make for a great balance of genres. For any fan of indie rock, check out Yard, a smaller band that’s definitely on the rise.

To The Faithful Departed – The Cranberries

Although To The Faithful Departed was originally released in 1996, the band is back twenty-seven years later, with the long-awaited deluxe edition. Lead singer Dolores O’Riordan tragically passed away in 2018, leading to The Cranberries’ retirement, but on October 6th, the deluxe edition of their third album was finally released.

The deluxe edition of To The Faithful Departed features three demos and two early mixes of some of the songs featured on the original album, along with “Go Your Own Way”, a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s iconic song. O’Riordan’s soft voice and thick accent are pretty unforgettable, so I highly suggest you take a listen to this deluxe version and feel the magic of The Cranberries once again.

Solar Music – Butcher Brown

In the mood for a little bit of jazz? Check out Butcher Brown’s ninth album, Solar Music, released on October 6th. If you haven’t heard of Butcher Brown before, I recommend you definitely check them out. Their NPR Tiny Desk Concert is a great place to start. The quintet describes their unique sound as a mixture of “jazz, funk, hip-hop, soul, and a bit of R&B.” It’s a conglomerate of new and old that makes for great listening.

Combining modern, soulful vocals with nostalgic, funky instrumentals, Solar Music is the perfect new album for anyone who’s a fan of modern takes on the iconic genre of jazz.

Cousin – Wilco

Twenty-eight years after their first studio album, Wilco is back again. Their thirteenth studio album, Cousin, was released on September 29th. Cousin is definitely a change in pace for the alternative rock band, although its calm serenity comes in a thoughtful, evocative way. Slow guitar, soft drums, and Jeff Tweedy’s familiar vocals make Cousin a great album for any alternative rock lover.
