K-Pop boyband EXO makes a surprise comeback with their new pre-single, ‘Let Me In’. This drop came as an announcement for their upcoming seventh album, EXIST, set to release on July 10, 2023. EXO formed in 2011 with South Korean entertainment agency, SM Entertainment. Today, the group consists of nine active members.
After a long 4-year hiatus, fans are through the roof about the group’s new cinematic and musical masterpiece. The music video already has over 5 million views on YouTube. But this is not another ordinary album announcement. When EXO debuted in 2012, they established a theme of the members being aliens from outer space. With this new video, there lies a new piece of obscure lore that fans are eager to dissect.
Let’s take a look at what this new song has in store!
the lore behind ‘let me in’
‘Let Me In’ is one of the groups’ calmer songs. The sound, vocals, and steady beat are relaxing. The music video begins with an unnamed boy running through the woods holding a large black rock. After the song title flashes briefly, the boy throws the rock into a river and runs back into the woods.
The video primarily features various shots of each member in random locations. These locations include a black room with a black and white filter, an empty movie theater, a beach, a cloudy wet road, and an empty apartment. The black rock appears periodically throughout the video. It turns out that this rock has specially properties as it begins to float and time moves backwards.
It turns out this rock is part of a larger asteroid that crashed into Earth. All of the pieces come together and float back into space. The true meaning behind the visuals is unclear. Fans theorize that the different locations shown represent different dimensions. The visuals and vocals are beautiful and melancholic.
The lyrics tell the story of the narrator longing for the love of their life. This love is likely someone who left the narrator. It’s a simple love song with a simple message and it does a great job with laying the foundation for the rest of the album.
