In the pop star space, very few have had a rise to fame quite like Doja Cat. While her previous records have spawned hits like “Tia Tamera” and “Mooooo”, no song catapulted her to the level of success she has right now like “Say So“. The song became a TikTok trend, with many more from her catalogue following suit. Her hits up to this point has consisted of fun, short songs that are well made, but designed for radio play and TikTok repeatability.
With the release of her new song “Attention”, Doja Cat promised a full rap song and designated her old work as “cash-grabs”. With a new sound and a track length of 4 minutes and 37 seconds, how does the new Doja Cat compare to her previous music?

Absolutely! Doja Cat isn’t playing anymore, and this song is a reminder of that. Opening the song, the chorus discusses something that needs attention and affection. In these verses, she calls for a man to “hold it like it’s precious”. While some have interpreted this as a sexual reference, these verses act as a metaphor for her as a pop star. In this role, she constantly seeks affection and attention. However, she doesn’t need love, as mentioned in the chorus, just attention. Despite the high pitched vocals and relaxed delivery, the chorus feels sad. If the only thing you crave as an artist is validation, wouldn’t that make your art less meaningful? We get the answer to this in the verses.
In the verses, she dives head first into the criticisms she’s received as an artist, and responds to them. Over a simple beat, she does this with a perfectly cocky attitude and disses towards others in the game. These verses address issues like how seriously she takes her career, how her break from music changed her, and her place in the rap game. They all lead back to the theme from the verses regarding female pop stars sacrificing their autonomy to make it in the industry. Given the songs philosophy, it seems that Doja had to make a song like this, where she’s addressing everything said about her. After all, she just craves attention… right?

What Does this mean for her upcoming album?
While some thought this song was a teaser for her next album, Doja has gone on record saying this song is more of a statement then a test to what she has in store. In my opinion, this makes perfect sense. A song like this is important for her career, but it’s not the best way to start an album rollout. However, I and many rap fans are grateful for this song to be put out.
