Charli XCX Drops A Hyperpop Banger for the ‘Barbie’ Movie

UK based singer/hyperpop artist Charli XCX is a formidable force in pop music. Her discography remains a stable in hyperpop and experimental music. Her last album, Crash, saw a departure from this sound in favor of a more marketable approach. This proved to be successful, gaining her more attention than ever and breaking personal records.

“Speed Drive” was produced by British music producer Mark Ronson, who is also an executive producer for the upcoming Barbie film. The new single came out on June 30, 2023 and has already received positive reviews. How does the song hold up to others in Charli XCX’s career, as well as the other soundtrack songs?

‘Speed Drive’ is a short, Yet NECESSARY piece of Charli’s Discography

Speed Drive- Charli XCX

Despite the song being only just under 2 minutes, it delivers a hard-hitting pop track. The song samples Robyn’s ‘Cobrastyle’ and interpolates ‘Mickey’ by Toni Basil. These are used tastefully with the song’s unique and fun personality and doesn’t rely on the sample for success. The lyrics are about driving in your car at full speed with your bestie. A simple concept is elevated with a snappy chorus and smart verses.

‘Speed Drive’ is an Excellent Addition to the BArbie Soundtrack

If the songs on the soundtrack have anything in common, they’re all very short. Due to there being many featured artists, there has to be plenty of room for everyone. In addition, the film will most likely feature each song, so shorter songs make for better snippets in a film.

In comparison to other song on the soundtrack, ‘Speed Drive’ is a highlight. A distinct feature of the soundtrack is each song sounding like the current artists sound. Whether it’s Charli doing hyperpop, or Dua Lipa doing disco-pop, everyone is doing their personal sound at their very best. With the influx of album announcements and releases, Barbie will stand out among its competition.
