If you’re not familiar with Tiny Desk Concerts, it’s the place where artists go to show just how amazing and talented they truly are. It really has it all: stripped back versions of iconic songs, live band accompaniment, and a relaxed atmosphere. I can’t imagine a better way to experience music, especially from some of my favourite artists.
Here are a few performances to give you an idea of just how special these Tiny Desk Concerts really are. I hope you love them as much as I do.
Snarky Puppy performs their two songs “Tarova” and “Xavi”. The best word I can use to describe this set is chaotic. BUT it’s chaotic in the best way possible. There’s so much going on with so many instruments being played at the same time, but somehow, all of the sounds go well together. My favourite part of this performance is the way the band gets the audience involved. I enjoyed this set just from watching it on my laptop, and I can’t imagine what it must have been like to experience it in person!
tyler, the creator
Before we talk about Tyler, let’s acknowledge his backup singers and band because they played a big part in making this performance incredible. Now, let’s talk about Tyler and the way he directs the band, plays the piano, sings, raps, improvises lyrics, and interacts with the audience, all at the same time. Tyler, the Creator has to be one of the best performers in the music business. His energy stays high through his performance of his three tracks – “Boredom”, “See You Again”, and “Glitter”.
The king of autotune stepped into the Tiny Desk studio and showed everyone exactly why he is as successful as he is. This might be my absolute favourite Tiny Desk performance. I could listen to T-Pain’s stripped down vocals all day. If there was any doubt that this man can SING, this performance erases it. He performs “Buy U A Drank (Shawty Snappin’)”, “Up Down (Do This All Day)”, and “Drankin’ Patna”.
If we’re talking about iconic, we’ve got to talk about Lizzo’s Tiny Desk set! Someone in the comment section of this video on YouTube said “How are they still building buildings when she has ALL the pipes?!” and I couldn’t agree more. Not to mention, she pulls out her flute, and when Lizzo pulls out her flute, it’s time to sit down, shut up, and LISTEN. Such a great performance of her songs “Cuz I Love You”, “Truth Hurts”, and “Juice”.
Leon Bridges is the definition of musical excellence. He absolutely mesmerizes everyone in the room with his performance of his tracks “Coming Home”, “Smooth Sailin”, “Twistin’ & Groovin”, and “River”.
Mac Miller performs “Small Worlds”, “What’s The Use (Feat. Thundercat)”, and “2009”. I’m sure that every Mac Miller fan has seen this live performance, but if you haven’t, check it out IMMEDIATELY. I can’t say much to describe how happy watching this set makes me, so it’s best if you just find out for yourself.
I hope that Tiny Desk Concerts never stop happening. Each one is so unique and special and guaranteed to make your day a little bit brighter. Happy listening!
