The Mic Drop team is back with week 8 of your favourite midweek music fix: What We’re Listening to Wednesdays. As always, we’re diving into the tracks we’ve been spinning nonstop and those songs that somehow just get us right now. This week’s lineup is packed with fresh sounds, unexpected vibes, and the kind of earworms that’ll have you hitting repeat. Let’s drop the needle.
My Selects
Track One – “Jam (feat. WizKid)” – Starboy & Chronixx
My first track is bringing you a taste of the islands. Starboy, WizKid, and Chronixx serve up a smooth, feel-good vibe. It’s laid-back, breezy, and packed with sunny rhythms that make you want to sway wherever you are. It’s golden hour energy in a song—warm and easy.
Track Two – “Hold On” – SBTRKT & Sampha
This track by SBTRKT and Sampha is one of those tracks that hits you right in the feels. Sampha’s buttery vocals glide over SBTRKT’s smooth, moody production, creating the perfect soundtrack for your 2 a.m. overthinking. It’s vibey, emotional, and somehow still sounds fresh years later.
Track Three – “Me and Your Mama” – Childish Gambino
Childish Gambino gives us a full-blown emotional rollercoaster in the best way in this track. It starts all dreamy and sweet, then explodes into a fiery, soulful storm of raw vocals and wailing guitars. It’s dramatic, over-the-top, and impossible not to feel in your chest, just the way we like it.
Nathan’s Selects
Track Four – “So Divine” – Michi
“So Divine” by Michi is dreamy, flirty, and smooth as silk. It’s got that laid-back, late-night vibe with just the right amount of sparkle, like a crush you can’t stop thinking about. Chill and sweet with a little edge, it’s pure main character energy.
Track Five – “Serotonin Moonbeams” – The Blessed Madonna
This vibrant track from The Blessed Madonna is a full-on dance floor daydream. It’s euphoric, weirdly romantic, and totally irresistible—like falling in love under a disco ball at 3 a.m. With pulsing beats and glittery synths, it’s serotonin in song form.
Track Six – “Real Life” – The Marías
Nathan’s last track comes from The Marías. This track is effortlessly cool, with a dreamy vibe that feels like a slow-motion moment. The sultry vocals and smooth beats pull you into a world that’s soft, intimate, and full of longing. It’s the perfect soundtrack for when you’re in your feels but still vibing.
Laneisha’s Selects
Track Seven – “Lose My Cool” – Kali Uchis
Laneisha’s first pick, “Lose My Cool” by Kali Uchis is silky, sultry, and chill. It’s got that slow-burn groove that makes you want to sway with your eyes closed and pretend you’re unbothered—even if you’re totally not. Smooth vocals and retro vibes make it a lowkey anthem for keeping it together (or at least trying to).
Track Eight – “You Can’t Always Get What you Want” – Erika de Casier
“You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by Erika de Casier is a sleek, soft-spoken spin on the classic. She swaps the rock ’n’ roll drama for smooth beats and whispery vocals, turning it into a cool, late-night confession. It’s understated, stylish, and somehow even more relatable than the original.
Track Nine – “Obsolete” – Galdive
“Obsolete” by Galdive is a dreamy blend of vintage charm and modern chill. With jazzy touches, airy vocals, and a mellow groove, it feels like floating through a faded memory. It’s nostalgic, romantic, and cool, like a love letter sealed in a lo-fi beat.
That’s a wrap on week 8! Catch you next Wednesday for more bops, jams, and everything in between!
