Denzel Curry & Andy Hearnden Collab

American rapper, Denzel Curry, recently collaborated with New Zealand-raised chef, Andy Hearnden. The two are both exceptional in their crafts, cooking and making music. Recently, followers were able to enjoy a collaborative creation from the both of them, featuring their charismatic personalities and cooking skills. This collab was perfectly-executed, allowing viewers to see different sides of both creatives, as well as notice the connection between the two, regardless of the differences in professional careers. We loved seeing the collaboration from the two—the way they combined their cultures and generational influences to explore their creativity together was spectacular.

Andy Hearnden (Andy Cooks): @andyhearnden

Andy Hearnden is one of my favorite food content creators online. Not only does he share content that is informative, aesthetically pleasing, and delicious; but he also showcases his exquisite music taste within his video productions. Hearnden is well-versed in the culinary industry, having managed restaurants, cafes and bars prior to content creation. In the background music of many of his videos, Hearnden features ageless tracks that we love to remember.

The most recent I’ve noticed and appreciated are:

  • “It’s a Shame” – Kool G Rap
  • “Uplift” – Rakim
  • “Doin’ Time” – Sublime

Denzel Curry is one of the SoundCloud rap pioneers of our generation. Curry has gained success in his career through the releases of his mixtapes, garnering the attention of his fellow peers in the industry. This attention brought Curry much success in his career, bringing him to the mainstream. Denzel Curry shines in the spotlight, yet still remains immersed in the underground. His last album, King Of The Mischeivious South Vol. 2, features an extended list of household names in the rap game (new and old; underground and mainstream). King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2 dives back into the fun, high energy, and technical mastery that we all know and love Denzel Curry for.

Curry’s Chili

In the collab, Curry is teaching Hearnden his personal chili recipe. Chili is a classic that was cultivated on U.S. land, so this introduction of cultures through food was entertaining to watch. Hearnden is an astounding chef, who has years of experience in the kitchen and building restaurants all over Auckland, London, Sydney, and Melbourne. Although he has cooked a countless range of dishes from all regions of the continent, it was refreshing seeing him make a dish that originated on American soil.

Sharing Culture and Sharing Chili

The backstory of chili in America derives from journal clippings from around the 1800s. There are multiple variations of old chili recipes that are reminiscent of modern chili today. Due to trade, expansion, and sharing of cultures, the standard chili recipe around America has shifted into each person’s own particular blend. An extremely customizable recipe, the hearty dish was popular with cowboys (most of whom were of Mexican descent) and gold rushers, on their way to California. The Mexican influence provides a new world of spices, peppers, and deep rich flavors to the dish that we all know and love.

Denzel’s Chili recipe is pretty standard, including all of the necessary spices (cumin, oregano, bay leaf, paprika, chili powder, salt, pepper, etc.). Curry enjoys this recipe with garlic bread, which was unexpected, but still sounds delicious.

Typically, I’ve seen chili served with cornbread, but who doesn’t love garlic bread?

Curry was raised in Miami Gardens, Florida, and learned how to cook from his mother. Her cultural influences and experiences have helped develop Curry’s recipe to what it is today.

Conversations Between Chefs

Denzel: “I’ma need you to do me a favor and clean up your station.”

Andy: “Yes sir.”

Denzel: “Whenever you’re done using something, put it back.”

Andy: “Your mom taught you well, huh?”

Denzel: “I just used her tone just now, haha, so you know this is gon’ be good.”

Denzel then asks Andy, chef to chef, what he thinks of his culinary skills.

Andy: “Bro! I’m impressed!”

Andy and Denzel complete their bowls of chili and share with the production team. The video ends with a fist bump and compliments to the chefs.

Food & Music

At the end of the day, who doesn’t love food and music? The combination of the two almost always equate to a great time. In the age of technology, content-creation, and creative expression—it was wonderful to see two of my favorites in the industry share a common interest. Food and music undeniably bring people together.
