New Music Friday

by Nathan Corrál

This week’s New Music Friday is fresh off the press. Our staff made a selection of songs from numerous genres. From EDM to retro soul, there is a bit of everything for everyone. We hope you enjoy them!

“Stay” by FISHER

Global sensation FISHER has dropped a fresh new track just in time for festival season. “Stay” in an anthemic house track guaranteed to have any crowd dancing. The track’s vocals sound reminiscent of early 2000s dance music. The build allows for the vocals to stand out after the killer beat drop. Throughout the track, a trippy synth lingers– electrifying the song. Everything about “Stay” proves why FISHER has become a beloved DJ around the world.

“Pined For You My Whole Life” by Matt Maltese

Singer/songwriter Matt Maltese has released the second single from his upcoming record, Hers. “Pined For You My Whole Life” is as romantic as a song could get. Maltese’s storytelling talent adds a great deal of character to each track he releases. Every tune he releases is captivating– lyrically and sonically. On the track, he leans into a smooth R&B drum and bassline. When the chorus hits, listeners are graced with beautiful harmonies. Along with the song, Maltese also announced a world tour to accompany the release of the new record. This track is my personal favorite this week.

“Shy” by Arielle Free and Might Delete Later

Arielle Free makes her bold return to Defected Records at full speed ahead. In collaboration with the insanely talented Might Delete Later, “Shy” is a hypnotic new dance track. The vocals are soft, sometimes taking on whisper-like features giving listeners the chills. The haunting synth that hums in the background of the song gives it a moody feel. “Shy” is a soft anthem perfect for the upcoming summer season.

“For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women)” by Japanese Breakfast

Today marks the release of the fourth album of the American indie band, Japanese Breakfast. “For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women)” departs from the joy explored on their last record Jubilee. The brand new record dives into sorrow with a deep melancholic sound. The lead singer, Michelle Zauner, showcases her vocal talent through her meaningful lyrics. Throughout the record there are several beautiful orchestral arrangements that match the album’s emotional tone. It truly is a captivating record, from start to finish.

“Been So Long” by Durand Jones & The Indications

Contemporary R&B and soul group Durand Jones & The Indications have released a brand new single “Been So Long.” It’s their first release since their 2021 album Private Space. “Been So Long” is the lead single from their forthcoming album, Flowers. Drummer and singer, Aaron Frazer graces the track with soulful vocals over a snappy drum. The band comes together on the chorus to beautifully harmonize. The Indications talent shines on the track, adding a groovy bassline and dreamy keys, to create the retro soul sound fans love. Flowers comes out on June 27th.

“Just Us” by Jack Harlow and Doja Cat

Two of music’s biggest names, Jack Harlow and Doja Cat, have teamed up for a brand new song “Just Us.” This collab blends the style of both stars into a catchy, playful song. The track’s flirtatious flow allows each artist to shine in a unique way while they come together to make something great.
