10 Oldies for Your Spooky Season Playlist

It’s finally October! Browsing records from the 60s to the 80s, there’s no shortage of vintage tunes to get you in the fall mood. I gravitate towards older music since I grew up raised on classic rock, but I promise these songs are still just as catchy decades years later.

So, looking to curate the perfect Halloween party soundtrack? In need some new (old) music? From witches to devils and all things in between, here are ten oldies to kick off the ultimate spooky season playlist.

“Werewolves of London” – Warren Zevon

Released in 1978, “Werewolves of London” is the perfect combination of wacky lyrics and upbeat instrumentals that’s guaranteed to be stuck in your head. Fun fact: Mick Fleetwood and John McVie of the iconic Fleetwood Mac are featured here on the drums and bass.

“Somebody’s Watching Me” – Rockwell

The 1984 hit “Somebody’s Watching Me” combines synth and guitar in the coolest way. And if you’re thinking those backing vocals sound familiar, you’re right! It’s none other than Michael Jackson, “The King of Pop” himself.

“Abracadabra” – Steve Miller Band

“Abracadabra”, released in 1982 by Steve Miller Band, is a catchy take on the mystic and mystery behind an aspiring magician and the fun that follows. This magician’s song is definitely spooky.

“Psycho Killer” – Talking Heads

Released in 1977, Talking Heads’ debut album was impressively full of hits. “Psycho Killer”, based on on Norman Bates from the classic Psycho, is the perfect anthem for Halloween. Especially for anyone who loves scary movies.

“Devil Inside” – INXS

INXS’ music is pretty much peak 80s, so their 1987 hit “Devil Inside” is the perfect dance track for your soon-to-be Halloween party playlist.

“Season of The Witch” – Donovan

1966’s “Season of the Witch” is a classic, but if you’re looking for a more modern take, check out Lana Del Rey’s extra witchy version here. Want something a bit more rock ‘n’ roll? Joan Jett’s cover is for you.

“Maneater” – Hall & Oates

Nelly Furtado’s “Maneater” is iconic, but looking for even more of a throwback? Check out this 1982 original. It’s an entirely different song, but I promise, just as catchy. (Maybe even a bit more?)

“Witchy Woman” – Eagles

There’s no shortage of witchy women during spooky season, but check out this track, released in 1972, by the Eagles.

“Runnin’ with the Devil” – Van Halen

Can’t get enough of INXS? Check out Van Halen’s equally devilish hit. Released in 1978, “Runnin’ with the Devil” is the perfect addition to your playlist.

“Hungry Like the Wolf” – Duran Duran

Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf” is one of my favorites on this list. With a groovy bass and fun horror movie-esque lyrics, this 1982 track is pretty much peak Halloween.

Start Your SpookY Season off right

These ten songs are the perfect addition to every October playlist. Whether it be werewolves or magic or maneaters, there’s a little bit here for everyone. Take a listen for yourself and let us know what you think!
