Emo Girl: Cringey or Catchy?

If you’re a follower of Willow or Machine Gun Kelly, you may have been hyped up for the release of Emo Girl on YouTube this past week. Or maybe you saw the song trending on TikTok like I did. You may be thinking, “Oh! The song is trending! That means it’s good, right?” Not according to the videos I’ve been seeing, which mostly entail of content like this:

idk why im doing the ariana grande sleeve thing #willow #mgk #emo #emogirl #gatekeeping #music #hottake #AlaskaAirCAREoke #willowsmith (tiktok.com)

But what makes the song so cringey? Well for starters, let’s look at the lyrics: Notice a pattern? I sure do! The music that accompanies it is catchy enough, but definitely generic sounding in my opinion.

That alone shouldn’t be enough to completely clown on this song, but that’s not all it’s about. To me, it feels like they’re trying so hard to do the whole emo thing to the point where it’s not emo, just ridiculous. They’re artists that are trying to appeal to a community that isn’t theirs, and their impression is poorly done. With Machine Gun Kelly being in his thirties, it adds an extra layer to the cringe cake. It sounds like, as my corny mother would say, he’s trying to be “hip with the hops” and failing at it.

On the bright side, at least we got some funny TikToks out of the deal.

I’m keeping the Doc Martens tho. I’ve had them for like 4 years I’m attached. #mgk#willowsmith#machinegunkelly#emogirlmgk#thissongsucks#mybreakingpoint#emo#emokid#emogirl#warpedtour#mychemicalromance#mcr#alt#attiktok

What do you think? Is Emo Girl cringey or catchy?
