Women in Music: INJI: The Viral Girl Who Turned Pop Into a Playground

by Cheyenne Leitch

It’s not every day that a college dorm room becomes a pop factory, but then again, INJI was never here to play by the rules. Two years after her debut single “Gaslight” lit up the internet, the Turkish-born, Philly-raised artist has evolved from a TikTok breakout to one of pop’s sharpest new voices. She’s bold, funny, effortlessly self-aware and building a lane all her own.

From Istanbul to Internet Fame

Before the internet crowned her the queen of confident bops, INJI (real name İnci Gürün) was a classically trained pianist studying in Istanbul. Music wasn’t new to her, it was in her DNA. Her family played guitar, she studied theory, and by high school, she was leading jazz choirs. That early training gave her the ear of a perfectionist, but her spirit has always been more playful than polished.

Then came college in the U.S., where she split her time between business classes and the piano keys. It was during that blur of caffeine and coursework that “Gaslight” was born; a cheeky, catchy song she threw online for fun. The internet did the rest. Within days, INJI went from homework deadlines to headline playlists.

The “Gaslight” Effect

“Gaslight” wasn’t just a viral hit, it was an introduction. It told us exactly who INJI was: witty, confident, and a little bit chaotic in the best way. The lyrics were funny, the beat was danceable, and the energy was pure serotonin. Listeners weren’t just replaying the track, they were quoting it.

Instead of chasing the same formula, INJI doubled down on unpredictability. She followed up with Madeline, The One, and Bellydancing,” each one dripping with personality and unfiltered joy. Every release felt like she was reinventing the pop game in real time. Her debut EP LFG dropped in 2023, full of infectious beats and sharp one-liners. And earlier this year, WE GOOD picked up right where that left off – more polish, more groove, and even more INJI.

Why Everyone’s Talking About Her

Here’s the thing about INJI: she’s not trying to be perfect. Her music works because it’s human, hilarious, and honest. One minute she’s giving us club bangers about confidence; the next, she’s spilling her most relatable thoughts about modern life and friendship.

Her voice cuts through the noise; smooth yet punchy, playful yet deliberate. And her classical background sneaks in through her production choices, layering dance-pop hooks over rhythms that actually have structure and musicality. It’s why her songs stick around long after the initial viral wave fades.

INJI’s also quickly become a must-see live performer. Her shows are packed with charisma, choreography, and a sense that anything could happen. Whether she’s performing in New York or London, she doesn’t just sing, she commands.

The Essential INJI Playlist

A quick refresher for anyone just joining the party:

  1. Gaslight – The debut single that started it all. Infectious, ironic, and impossible to skip.
  2. Madeline – Pure main-character energy with a beat that won’t quit.
  3. The One – A sleek, confident anthem that shows her pop potential.
  4. Bellydancing – A celebration of culture, rhythm, and attitude in one track.
  5. Girlz – The latest fan favorite and an instant friendship anthem.

Each track marks a checkpoint in INJI’s evolution, from bedroom producer to festival main stage.

Looking Ahead

Now that INJI has two EPs under her belt, fans are (politely) demanding the next big thing: a full-length album. But if there’s one thing the INJI faithful have learned, it’s patience.

INJI is gearing up to drop SUPERLAME, her forthcoming mixtape, on October 24. In her social posts, she teased “TEEN ANGST” as one of the lead tracks. The project leans into raw emotion, dance-pop textures, and the kind of vulnerability that’s become part of her signature sound.

She’s been sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses, moodboard visuals, and studio snippets, building anticipation without overhyping. Fans are already speculating on collaborators, production styles, and which direction she’ll lean; pop, alternative, or somewhere in between.

Pop’s Coolest Overachiever

INJI’s rise feels like a case study in how to do it right in the streaming era. She went viral without selling out, built a brand without faking it, and turned a moment into a movement. She’s clever, consistent, and completely herself, a rare combo in the pop world.

If LFG and WE GOOD were her warm-ups, the next chapter is going to hit hard. When INJI finally decides to drop the next banger, you already know it’s going to be worth the wait.
