In an unexpected turn of events, the world’s most iconic dance music festival, Tomorrowland, just took a massive hit. On the evening of Wednesday, July 16, just two days before gates were set to open, the Mainstage at Tomorrowland, this year named Orbyz, caught fire and was completely destroyed.

Footage posted by nearby residents quickly made its rounds on social media, showing massive flames engulfing the elaborate set as black smoke poured into the sky over Boom, Belgium. The stage, a towering centerpiece known for its elaborate themes and mind-blowing visuals, was meant to anchor the 2025 edition of the festival. Instead, it’s now a pile of scorched rubble, and the centerpiece of one of dance music’s most anticipated weekends has gone up in smoke.

No Injuries, But Major Questions

Luckily, no one was hurt, as the fire happened during a staging window while only crew members were onsite. The workers were safely evacuated while local firefighters rushed in to contain the blaze. Officials confirmed the fire is now fully under control, and surrounding wooded areas were protected from further damage. The response from emergency crews was fast and efficient, preventing an even greater disaster.

While the exact cause hasn’t been confirmed, some eyewitnesses reported pyrotechnic testing moments before the blaze started. That’s prompted speculation that a technical malfunction may be to blame, but investigations are still underway. Prosecutors in the Antwerp region have opened a case to explore potential negligence or malfunction in either the fire systems or the effects setup. No official cause has been released yet, but speculation continues to grow online and among fans.

Festival Still Happening, Just Without Its Star Attraction

Here’s the good news: Tomorrowland 2025 is still on. Organizers have assured fans that the festival will move forward, with performances spread across the remaining stages. While the Mainstage was the heart of the experience, Tomorrowland’s sprawling layout and deep bench of talent means the show will go on as planned.

“Calling off the event is the last thing we want to do,” a festival spokesperson told press early Thursday. DreamVille, Tomorrowland’s signature camping experience, has already opened, and satellite events in Brussels and Antwerp are continuing as scheduled. Organizers also emphasized that the remaining infrastructure is safe and fully ready for crowds.

Reinvention on the Fly

Rebuilding a Mainstage of that scale in less than 48 hours is next to impossible, but Tomorrowland is known for pushing boundaries. Organizers are exploring creative ways to reimagine the experience, potentially expanding other stages or building temporary structures. What fans see this weekend might not look like what they expected, but it might end up being even more unforgettable.

Fans on the ground have responded with support and resilience. Many say they’re just grateful the festival wasn’t canceled, and that nobody was harmed. With a lineup that still includes heavy-hitters like Martin Garrix, David Guetta, Peggy Gou, Meduza, and more, the energy is still set to be sky-high.

Tomorrowland has weathered storms before, literally and figuratively. The brand has always bounced back. This is no different.

The stage may be gone, but the spirit is still electric.
