You’ll find the full playlist linked below. Press play and enjoy!

Cheyenne’s Selections:

“Hurdy Gurdy Man” – Donovan (1968)

Donovan Leitch stands as one of the most respected songwriters and recording artists of his era. (Cheyenne—is there a family tie here? 👀) With “Hurdy Gurdy Man,” you get a glimpse into his pioneering influence on psychedelic rock. Rather than following trends, Donovan helped shape a genre that has resonated across decades. It’s only fitting that “Hurdy Gurdy Man” kicks off this week’s Timeless Tuesday playlist.

“U Don’t Know” – Jay-Z (2001, The Blueprint)

Released on Jay-Z’s iconic album The Blueprint, “U Don’t Know” packs a lyrical punch. As a global icon, Jay-Z has built his career on raw, intentional storytelling. The Blueprint didn’t just elevate his artistry—it forecasted his longevity in hip-hop.

Here are a few quick facts about the album:

  • SPIN magazine ranked it as Jay-Z’s top album.
  • The Library of Congress inducted The Blueprint into the National Recording Registry.

It’s easy to see why “U Don’t Know” delivers grit and truth, channeling Jay-Z’s past with unforgettable flow.

“Tired of Being Alone” – Al Green (1971)

Al Green returns to Timeless Tuesday—this time through Cheyenne’s playlist. His contributions to soul music are everlasting. With “Tired of Being Alone,” Green delivers a sound that continues to resonate emotionally and sonically. The Mic Drop team will always have a soft spot for soul, and we hope this track makes its way onto your rotation too.

Nathan’s Selections:

“Baby I’m-a Want You” – Bread (1972)

To kick off Nathan’s selections, we’re taking it back to a soft rock classic that never fails to hit home. “Baby I’m-a Want You,” from Bread’s fourth studio album of the same name, showcases exactly why this band holds a special place in the Mic Drop Team’s hearts. Not only does the track highlight the smooth, melodic charm of the early ’70s, but it also stands as one of Bread’s most successful singles, climbing the charts and earning global recognition. Whether you’re feeling nostalgic or discovering it for the first time, this one deserves a spot on repeat.

“You Know What” – N.E.R.D (2008)

Moving forward, we shift gears with a genre-bending gem from N.E.R.D. Known for constantly pushing boundaries, this iconic trio blends funk, hip-hop, and rock with effortless style. “You Know What” reminds us of their fearless artistry and sonic innovation. It’s a track that not only energizes, but also exemplifies their unmatched ability to fuse vibes across genres. When it comes to breaking molds, N.E.R.D does it best—and this track is a perfect example. Be sure to catch this funky track on our Timeless Tuesday playlist on Spotify.

“It’s Whatever” – Aaliyah (2001)

Finally, we wrap up Nathan’s selections with a silky-smooth R&B cut by none other than the R&B princess,  Aaliyah. “It’s Whatever,” from her 2001 self-titled album, closes the list on a soulful note. The track dives into themes of loyalty and emotional vulnerability, all while showcasing Aaliyah’s signature vocal style and unshakable presence. Her effortless blend of softness and strength continues to inspire, proving once again why she remains a timeless figure in R&B. Trust us—you’ll want to let this one play all the way through.

Laneisha’s Selections:

“Someone To Call My Lover” – Janet Jackson (2001)

Leave it to me to dig up another throwback trending on TikTok—yep, I found another! Janet Jackson’s voice is iconic: sultry, romantic, and unmistakably timeless. “Someone To Call My Lover” brings a nostalgic Y2K vibe that’s suddenly back in full swing. The groove is infectious, the bassline hits just right, and honestly, it never left our hearts.

While you’re at it, check out this hilarious TikTok edit of someone vibing to the track—it’s a vibe we fully support here at Mic Drop. We’re thrilled to welcome Janet back into our playlist rotation this week. You should too.

“Smooth Operator” (1984) & “Kiss of Life” (1992) – Sade

Next up, we double down with two legendary tracks from the one and only Sade. Yes, both of these hits have been making waves again on TikTok—and for good reason.

First, let’s talk about “Smooth Operator.” Odds are you’ve heard this one playing in your mother’s or grandmother’s living room. Sade’s sultry tone and love for smooth jazz created a track that defines cool elegance. Her influence continues to echo through today’s R&B artists like Snoh Aalegra, Raveena, and Kali Uchis.

Then there’s “Kiss of Life.” Released on her fourth studio album Love Deluxe, this romantic ballad showcases Sade’s signature sound at its most refined. Creators have been remixing and reinterpreting it with reverence, proving just how impactful her music remains.

Fun Fact: Sade was one of the very first artists to be interviewed by SPIN magazine—how iconic is that?
