These tracks continue to inspire, tell stories, and capture the true essence of artists for generations to come.
Listen to our complete playlist on Spotify, here.
This week we’re getting funky, groovy, and dancing at the disco. Let’s get into the Mic Drop Team’s selections.
My selections:
“What You Won’t Do For Love” – Bobby Caldwell (1978)
My list this week begins with “What You Won’t Do For Love”, by Bobby Caldwell. The song blends sounds of classic R&B, jazz, and soft rock. “What You Won’t Do For Love” is one of Caldwell’s most-known hits that has been sampled by rap legend, Tupac Shakur. “Do For Love” (1998) features the iconic laid back groove of Caldwell’s original, paying homage to the track sonically and lyrically. Both records capture the themes of love and yearning. “What You Won’t Do For Love” is a classic slow jam we will always love.
“Come Live With Me Angel” – Marvin Gaye (1976)
Next is, “Come Live With Me Angel” performed by R&B legend, Marvin Gaye. With his smooth and sensual voice, Gaye gave the generation the sound of soul. “Come Live With Me Angel” is groovy, funky, and sensual all at the same time. Gaye layers passionate riffs over a groovy bass-line to make for another timeless classic on the list.
Another famous sample to note is, “Wanna Get to Know You” by G-Unit and Joe (2003).
“Oh Honey” – Delegation (1978)
British band Delegation’s hit, “Oh Honey” is my last selection for the week. The smooth love ballad is funky, soulful, and romantic. “Oh Honey” is soft and gentle—featuring Delegation’s dreamy harmonies and romantic lyrics. The record provides the perfect slow jam, late night vibe.
“Oh Honey” has been widely sampled in many R&B songs, but my favorite is Kali Uchi’s “Never Be Yours”.
Fun Fact: “Never Be Yours” is from Kali’s old mixtape/SoundCloud days—released in 2012.
Nathan’s Selections:
“So Simple” – Alicia Keys, Lellow (2003)
Nathan’s selection for this week is, “So Simple”—a timeless favorite from Alicia Keys infamous album, The Diary of Alicia Keys. Keys’ infamous breakout album features deep soulful sounds of contemporary R&B, as well as her phenomenal vocal range and piano skills. “So Simple” is a perfect example of heartfelt storytelling through music. Alicia Keys is known for the emotional messages and stories she tells through her lyrics. “So Simple” is a track that does just that, exploring themes of yearning and longing for a love that used to be “So Simple”.
Cheyenne’s Selections:
“Young Hearts Run Free” – Candi Stanton (1976)
Cheyenne’s selection for the week is Candi Stanton’s “Young Hearts Run Free”. Released in the midst of the funk/disco era, this track oozes those happy disco vibes of the 70s. “Young Hearts Run Free” is a timeless favorite I imagine people getting groovy to in a “Soul-Train Line”. Produced by David Crawford, the groove is upbeat and undeniably danceable. While the production is upbeat and infectious, the lyrics provide a bittersweet message surrounding themes of love and unhealthy relationships. Stanton tells the story of being young, wild, and free—encouraging listeners to explore their freedom and learn more about themselves before getting “stuck” in toxic love relationships. See lyrics below.
Young hearts run free
They’ll never be hung up
Hung up like my man and me
My man and me
Oh! Young hearts
To yourself be true
Don’t be no fool when love don’t really love you
It don’t love you
“Young Hearts Run Free” has become an anthem of self-love and resilience. Encouraging listeners to use their best discernment in relationships—in turn, making the record an empowering one. “Young Hearts Run Free” is a timeless classic that we always keep coming back to.
