With school now officially out and June starting up, I don’t think it’s wrong to say that summer is in full swing. Time to throw on your swimsuits, grab a towel, and bask in the sun by the pool or beach. But wait! There are two big things you’re missing: music and a snack. Well, what if I told you that you could have your playlist and eat it too?
I had the idea for a fruit salad playlist with a friend of mine a few years ago. We got a kick out of songs that had fruits in their titles. Every time we found one we liked we put them into a playlist to add some more ingredients to our salad. This type of playlist works perfectly for summer because fruit is the summer food. It’s vibrant, sweet, refreshing, and at times even tropical. The songs in this playlist have to fit that same bill in some way. Whether they’re fun, bright, or just talk about summer. Let’s dig in!
“Blueberry Faygo” by Lil Mosey
Let’s kick it off with an obvious one. Lil Mosey’s smash summer hit was hard to escape back in 2019-2020. It gained a lot of traction through snippets that were trending on TikTok. Almost everybody knew the whole chorus before the actual song even came out. For good reason too, this song is undeniably catchy. More than that it is such a great summer song. It’s fun, bouncy, and has a cover that screams summer.
“Watermelon Sugar” by Harry Styles
Here’s a song that will never leave your brain once you hear it. Harry Styles’s first-ever number one was bound to be a hit when it first dropped in 2019. The song has a laidback jazzy sound that’s perfect for a beachside lounge. Harry makes endless references to fruits and summer throughout the song as well. We are going to ignore the underlying meaning behind the song though.
“Strawberry Sunscreen” by Lostboycrow
Taking a small break from the chart toppers to highlight a few underground cuts. “Strawberry Sunscreen” has that summer sound right from the get-go. The plucky little guitar riff mixed with Lostboycrow’s unique vocals makes for the perfect vibe. It’s a sweet indie love song that would be a great soundtrack for a top-down drive around the town with your summer fling.
“orange juice” by BETWEEN FRIENDS
Speaking of songs that give off that kind of vibe. “orange juice” has that right kind of laidback energy to fit almost any summer setting. The aforementioned top-down drive, poolside or beachside, nighttime bonfire, etc. The lead singer’s ethereal vocals lamenting on orange juice and “citrus kisses” set the perfect atmosphere. It feels like you’re stuck in that aesthetic summer picnic featured in the music video.
“Pineapple Skies” by Miguel
Last but not least we have what I believe to be one of the most perfect summer songs. Miguel’s “Pineapple Skies” is so bright and summery from the first chords we hear. When our singer gets into his first verse talking about being high enough and pineapple skies you can’t help but feel the vibes. He promises us that everything will be alright and you believe him. I have had this song in summer playlists since it came out and it won’t be leaving anytime soon.
