Just like that, August is over. As we get ready to welcome September, we bring you the final New Music Friday of an unforgettable month. Trust me when I tell you that this week’s roundup will not disappoint. We have Sabrina Carpenter’s highly anticipated follow up to Short n’ Sweet, a new Blood Orange record and singles from Bryson Tiller, Alabama Shakes and more! Happy listening!
Man’s Best Friend by Sabrina Carpenter
Just a year after her hit album Short n’ Sweet, Sabrina Carpenter has already given fans a brand new record, Man’s Best Friend. In case you missed it, Cheyenne gave us info on everything we needed to do to prepare for the singer’s next masterpiece! Man’s Best Friend combines everything we love about Carpenter. Her witty lyrics fuse with several sonic influences. On tracks like “Tears” and “House Tour,” the production gets groovy bringing out a heavy disco, funk influence. “Never Getting Laid” sounds like an homage to a ‘80s RnB. The superstar also gives fans the twang, country pop sounds that have become a talent she’s identifiable for. Ultimately, Carpenter gave fans a breakup record. She beautifully handles heartbreak through humor making it quite the listening experience.
“Another Life” by Alabama Shakes
“Another Life” by Alabama Shakes marks the band’s first original release since their Grammy winning album, Sound & Color. Known for their gritty alt/rock and soulful vocals, the band picked up right where they left off. Lead singer Brittany Howard has vocals unlike any other vocals in the industry. Raspy, soulful and a force to be reckoned with, she shines on the brand new track. A bluesy guitar erupts towards the end of the track building a tension you never want to be released. Fans all over are now high with hopes that a new record is coming a decade later.
“When I Pull Up” by Bryson Tiller, Lord Guiliani, Freddy Freddy
On “When I Pull Up,” Bryson Tiller joins forces with Lord Giuliani and Freddy Freddy to bring our ears a fresh new track. The song has swag, a danceable beat and a contagious energy. There are subtle elements in the song that remind me of early 2000’s hip hop and RnB, but Tiller and his collaborators put a fresh spin on such an iconic sound. Can’t get enough of this? “When I Pull Up” was a double release with a “Night Mix.” version. As implied, this version works best at night, windows down and speakers on full blast.
Essex Honey by Blood Orange
The wait is finally over. Blood Orange released his highly anticipated album Essex Honey. The album features collaborations with Lorde, Caroline Polachek, Daniel Caesar and so many more. On this album, the mastermind behind Blood Orange, Dev Hynes, explores a new soundscape. This album is ambient and dreamy. Long instrumentation shares space with the deep, introspective song writing. It really makes you think and reflect with themes of grief and home. In a way, it’s almost hard to put words to exactly what Essex Honey is because this record is the first of its kind. There isn’t anything quite like it.
“Beggin” by Troyboi and BombayMami
One of our favorite collabs from this week is “Beggin” by Troyboi and BombayMami. BombayMami’s vocals dazzle over Troyboi’s mix of future trap sound. Both artists bring their signature style to create a remarkable track.
“When A Good Man Cries” by CMAT
“When A Good Man Cries” is the brand new EP from CMAT. The singer describes the title project as her way of “going fully country.” Recently, many artists have taken a swing at making country influenced music. Sometimes it works and others it doesn’t. CMAT does it gracefully giving listeners Euro Country a EURO-COUNTRY album with heartfelt lyrics. This is the beginning of a new era and we are here for it!
Well Mic Drop fam, that’s all for this week. We hope you dig these songs as much as we do!
