The weather this week wasn’t the only thing that was hot. New Music Friday brought the heat with a handful of stellar tracks. This week, we bring you fire singles from Doja Cat and SG Lewis. We also got brand new albums from Wolf Alice, Mariah the Scientist and Sombr. It doesn’t stop there! Check out everything the Mic Drop team picked this week!
“Jealous Type” by Doja Cat
After months of teasing snippets online Doja Cat finally dropped her long awaited single “Jealous Type.” It’s the first from her forthcoming album Vie. On “Jealous Type,” Doja makes a return to her fun, playful pop sound. The song totally pays homage to ‘80s pop. Everything from the groovy synth to the funky bass screams retro. Doja elevates the track with her sweet vocals and impeccable rapping.
“Feeling Gone (featuring London Grammar)” by SG Lewis
As many of us know, there hasn’t been a song of the summer like there was this time last year. Luckily for us, SG Lewis has come to save the day. The DJ and producer joined forces with English trio London Grammar for a fresh new track “Feeling Gone.” This is the third single from SG Lewis’ upcoming album Anemoia. Everything about this song is absolutely dreamy and euphoric. The vocals from London Grammar’s front woman transport listeners to the tropical soundscape created by SG.
“3AM IN ???????” by ZHU
If you want to keep dancing, well you’re in luck. Our next pick is from “3AM IN ???????” by one of dance music’s biggest names, ZHU. Sonically, the song channels its title. It brings 3am club energy with a heavy synth and progressive house elements. From the second the song starts, you’ll be hooked. Turn this one up late at night and dance until the sun comes up.
The Clearing by Wolf Alice
Indie rock band Wolf Alice dropped their brand new record The Clearing. This project is gritty, heartfelt and an emotional journey. The introspective songwriting ventures into themes of heartbreak and motherhood. My favorite tracks are “Just Two Girls” and “Passenger Seat.” Both sound like an homage to ‘70s rock with a classic Wolf Alice spin.
HEARTS SOLD SEPARATELY by Mariah the Scientist
Coming in hot with another new album, Mariah the Scientist gave us a gem. HEARTS SOLD SEPARATELY is an R&B masterpiece. The singer draws inspiration from’80s R&B delivering it to listeners in a fresh, reinvented way. Her new record brings passion together with romance guaranteed to put you in your feels. Tracks that stand out include “Rainy Days” and “All I Want + In Pursuit.” We have this entire record on repeat and we think you should too.
I Barely Know Her by Sombr
Breakout star, Sombr, has released his highly anticipated debut album I Barely Know Her. The 10 track album blends alt/pop with indie rock. Tracks like “undressed” and “we never dated” are nostalgic of the 2010’s indie rock sound. Lyrically and sonically, the record is raw and intimate, elevating the listening experience. “canal street” is a tearjerker showcasing sombr’s gift for songwriting.
“Mind Eraser (ft. Datti)” by BIJOU
BIJOU has teamed up with Datti for a new tune “Mind Eraser.” The hypnotic dance song is a fresh take on classic house. This marks BIJOU’s launch for a brand new, redefined sound. Datti’s hypnotic vocals start the track as a heavy, trance-like bass and rhythm. BIJOU is hitting the road on their first headline tour in two years. This is one you won’t want to miss so make sure to grab your tickets.
See you next week for another batch of New Music Friday selects!
