Locals Only: The Lagoons at The Troubadour

by Nathan Corrál

In the heart of West Hollywood resides the legendary Troubadour. The iconic stage has seen countless performances by some of the greats like Joni Mitchell, Elton John and Bob Dylan. That being said, playing The Troubadour is a huge milestone in any artist’s career. Over the weekend, Mic Drop attended a dreamy performance by The Lagoons at The Troubadour.

The Lagoons

Comprising of brothers Ryan and Joey Salen, The Lagoons blend indie pop, jazz, electronica  and surf rock to create a lush sound. The duo released their debut EP Gems in 2016. Quickly grabbing the attention of many, the pair began to grow a fanbase. Born and raised in California, the influence of the west coast heavily contributes to their beachy, surf sound.

The band can easily be recognized for their catchy tune “California.” When thinking about what “west coast music” sounds like, “California” is the perfect song to capture that feeling. Their latest album Island Hopping came out in 2024. Shortly after this release, the band gave fans a live record where they played the album front-to-back in Hermosa Beach.

Their live shows have made the band an act to keep your eye on. A live show put on by The Lagoons is guaranteed to leave you speechless. The brothers, joined on stage with their band, jam perfectly to fill each venue with their atmospheric sound. It is an unforgettable experience to watch The Lagoons play live. We got to witness their magic at The Troubadour on Friday night.

Club Lagoon

Since the beginning of March, The Lagoons have brought their Club Lagoon Tour to cities all over the U.S. Friday night marked a hometown show for the LA natives. Inside The Troubadour, a special energy from the greats that have played the venue prior fills every inch of the room. Anyone can feel it as they walk. The Lagoons played off of that high, as well as the crowd’s infectious energy. As the show started, cheering and excitement from the fans welcomed the band onto the stage.

Friday night’s show was extra special as the duo was joined on stage by a full band, truly bringing their music to life in a remarkable way. On keys, sax and vocals, Joey shined showcasing his impeccable talent. Ryan shredded on guitar the entire night. The brotherly bond shared between the two created a special chemistry on stage. They played off of one another, and it felt like being a fly on the wall during one of their jam sessions.

Their set featured a wide range of songs from their discography. Fans were pleased and ecstatic when they covered Wild Cherry’s “Play That Funky Music.” Later on, show opener Allegra Miles came back on stage to sing a song she co wrote with The Lagoons. One of the highlights of the night was when the disco ball hanging from the Troubadour lit up the entire room while Joey played a saxophone solo. The Lagoons put on a fantastic show; one that demands to be seen.
