Locals Only: The Head and the Heart at Greek Theater

by Nathan Corrál

The Greek Theater is one of LA’s most beloved music venues. Nestled in the heart of Griffith Park, the outdoor amphitheater has hosted some of the most iconic artists in music history. Each season, The Greek Theater puts out a stacked calendar featuring a wide range of talent. Over the weekend, indie folk band, The Head and the Heart took the stage at the Greek and gave a remarkable performance.

The Aperture Tour

Back in May, The Head and the Heart released their sixth studio album, Aperture. The band is currently on the road in support of the record on their “Aperture Tour.” Several outlets including Rolling Stone and NPR praised the beloved band for the latest addition to the impressive catalog. Aperture marks their first self produced record since their self titled debut back in 2011.

Over their decade-long career, The Head and the Heart have embarked on countless headline tours and have played some of the biggest music festivals in the country. Their high energy performances and on stage chemistry has cemented the six piece band as a must see act. Any stage they play, they bring a special kind of magic no other group or artist can recreate. We saw that magic first hand Sunday night at the Greek.

Night at The Greek

The Head and the Heart’s folk, rock sound is perfect for a venue like the Greek Theater. All the trees and greenery surrounding the amphitheater feels like a sweet escape from the busy city just down the street. At night, stars fill the sky setting the perfect mood for some live music.

Eager fans filled the seats at the Greek, anticipating the band’s arrival on stage. When it was finally time, everyone was up and on their feet ready for the show. The band opened with one of my personal favorites, “Living Mirage,” the title track of their fifth album. I couldn’t think of a better opening song. “Living Mirage” is one of those rare tracks that can be both a show opener and a show closer.

Early on in the show, the band played a nice balance of fan favorites like “All We Ever Knew” and “Another Story” along with deep cuts like “When I Fall Asleep” and “Winter Song.” Mixed into their set was also songs from the brand new record including “Cop Car” and “After the Setting Sun.”

Fans lit up the Greek Theater with their phone flash lights during “Let’s Be Still” making for a truly magical moment.

As someone who had seen The Head and the Heart before, I had somewhat of an idea of what to expect in the encore. “Finally Free” kicked off the last few songs of the night, followed by “Arrow.” Their final song, “Rivers and Roads,” is an absolute tearjerker. Whenever I’ve seen the band, hearing that song long is always the moment I look forward to the most. Anyone can see in the crowd the effect that track has on people. Not only is it an emotional song, but the band’s on stage chemistry goes up another level.

The Head and the Heart continue to wow fans all over the country and their show this past weekend was a testament to their undeniable talent. Make sure to get tickets now as their tour is coming to an end.
