Locals Only: Empress Of at The Getty

by Nathan Corrál

Summertime often allows music lovers to see their favorite artists play in beautiful outdoor settings. A setting sun, a cool breeze and some good music create the perfect summer night. We often think of amphitheaters and stadiums as some of the only places to watch live music outdoors. In LA, the options are endless.

Every summer, The Getty Center hosts an annual summer concert series. On select Saturdays, the courtyard is filled with music lovers and museum goers. All free — all ages. It’s the perfect way to spend a summer night. Over the weekend, The Getty Center hosted indie artist Empress Of in the courtyard, and Mic Drop was very fortunate to attend this magical night.

Lorely Rodriguez, aka Empress Of, is a singer, songwriter, musician and producer. Empress Of broke out onto the music scene in 2012. Since then, she has been putting out records and bringing her high energy live shows to cities all over the world. She’s embarked on several headline tours and has opened for artists including Carly Rae Jepsen.

Empress Of’s most recent studio album For Your Consideration, showcased the singer’s artistic growth and evolution, making it arguably her best album to date. On the record, she expands her electro synth-pop sound in brand new ways. Lyrically, she explores themes of love, lust and freedom. This is a record to dance to with the occasional tearjerkers sprinkled throughout. Featured on the record are Rina Sawayama and MUNA. If you have yet to check out For Your Consideration, we can’t recommend it enough!

Summer Nights At The Getty

On Saturday night, Empress Of brought her captivating energy and stage presence to a full house at The Getty. An eager crowd welcomed her onto the stage as she opened her set with her hypnotic dance track, “Save Me,” setting the mood and tempo for the rest of the evening.

As the sun went down and the night trickled in, the dancing ceased to stop. Her set included songs from her vast catalog. She debuted a brand new song, “Blasting Through The Speakers,” that excited fans as soon as they found out this was the track’s first time being played. The singer included deep cuts like, “Woman Is A Word” and “When I’m With Him.” She also played fan favorites like, “Bit Of Rain” and “Wild Girl.”
