Exploring A World Away With Ekali

Just last week on January 24th, Ekali released his debut album A World Away. Signed under Skrillex’s OWSLA label, the producer/DJ continues to wow EDM crowds around the world.

Although this is the Canadian producer’s first studio album, his name is widely known throughout EDM culture. You can catch Ekali performing at big name music festivals such as EDC, Holy Ship!, Lost Lands, Ultra Music Festival, and more.

What I love so much about Ekali is that he’s so versatile. He rose to fame after working with Drake on “Preach” and “Wednesday Night Interlude” from the If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late album. Both tracks received a double platinum plaque from RIAA, as well as selling over 2 million copies. This is one of my favorite things about EDM culture. Outsiders tend to think electronic music is just a bunch of “bloop bloop beep beep” sounds, but a lot of these DJ’s have contributed to many of the popular songs that everyone knows and loves.

That being said, Ekali dabbles in trap and hip hop when he can. This is evident when you listen to his live sets or see him in person. I haven’t had the chance to see him live yet, but when I do you can trust I’ll be rail for that performance. My favorite live set of his is from EDC 2018.

Stream for remixes of Cardi B, A$AP Ferg, Waka Flocka, TroyBoi, and many others coupled with his dubstep bangers. It’s a great contrast, definitely worth listening to.

You can always expect Ekali to bring a high-tempo, head-banging performance. However, new listeners who would refer to his new album would not immediately get that impression. Ekali’s music is so smooth, dreamy, and it makes you feel like you’re Alice in Wonderland wandering through an enchanted forest. It’s easy listening and brings a vibe that everyone can enjoy.

Since its release, I can’t stop listening to A World Away. Some of my favorites are: “Fairytale”, “Braids”, “Power”, “Back To You”, and “Be Fine”. Stream A World Away when you wanna chill, and listen to Ekali’s live sets when you need a pick me up.
