I remember the first time I listened to maye. Like many of her fans, “Tú” initiated my deep dive into her catalogue. Intrigued by the track’s cover art, I was eager to listen. maye– a singer songwriter from Venezuela. Her career started out with the release of her first single, “My Love,” in 2019. On the song maye takes turns singing in Spanish and English, a refreshing take on the standard dream pop sound. A solid debut set her up for the success of several other singles. All eyes were on maye when she released “Tú,” her second single. It’s a love song adored by many. Former president Barack Obama included it on his list of favorite songs the summer of 2021. While Spanglish dream pop has gained a massive following in recent years, no artist is coming out with anything quite like maye. Over the years, Maye has gained a massive number of listeners yet having released a full-length debut album.

After the release of “Tú” fans eagerly waited for what maye would come out with next. Her song “Moody” did not disappoint. The high paced keys that open the track takes listeners by surprise. It is in a whole different realm than “Tú,” showcasing maye’s versatility as a songwriter and producer. maye continued to shine a light on her skills as a musician when she released a cover of J Balvin and Bad Bunny’s “LA CANCÍON.” Her vocals are raspy accompanied by heavier percussion than the original. She does the song justice staying true to its reggaeton roots while putting her own spin on the track.
maye’s music is best to be consumed at the beach or frankly wherever the sun is shining. Growing up in Miami, listeners can hear how she has stayed true to her roots in every song she releases. “Versos de Placer” is an upbeat track that highlights her capability at doing so. While maye can get a listener on their feet, she also slows things down beautifully. “Descifrar” and “Maybe Baby” feature soft guitar strumming and plucking paired with sentimental vocals.

Her latest release “Kaleidoscope” is a sentinel reflection on a recent hiking trip that features recordings of her time in nature. While maye has no releases on the horizon, fans can await for her debut album with the hopes for its release before the end of the year.

After opening up for notable acts such as The Marías, maye is getting ready to hit the road with Faye Webster this November. I have been fortunate enough to see her headline her own show as well as open for other artists. Her infectious sets are just as dreamy live as they are listening to her songs elsewhere.
