If you haven’t tuned into John Mayer’s unofficial talk show “Current Mood” yet, you’re missing out. Talk show is a loose term to describe Mayer’s newest Instagram live series, which he hosts weekly with other musical guests. A totally free digital series on one of the most widely used social media platforms. No link to follow, no subscription fee, no YouTube channel. Just instant free content, WHY DIDN’T I THINK OF THAT. *screams internally*
Anyway, the guitar legend turned social media aficionado had special guest Thundercat on the show this week. If you’re unfamiliar, Stephen Lee Bruner, more commonly known by his stage name, is a Grammy winning bass player and producer known for his collaborations with hip hop artists. He’s worked with legends like Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Childish Gambino, and perhaps most tragically Mac Miller.
The two were not only partners in art, but also great friends. Thundercat was set to be a part of Mac’s Swimming tour that unfortunately never came to fruition. The tour was planned to have kicked off last weekend in San Jose.
Like any friends suffering a loss, sometimes music is the best way to cope, and in that way Thundercat and Mayer are no different. In addition to their Instagram live jam session in the name of Mac Miller, the two will both be playing at the memorial concert in LA on Halloween.
