SZA’S FIRST SONG of 2021: FROM SOUNDCLOUD TO THE TOP OF THE CHARTS

SZA released her latest single “I hate u” on December 3rd. Though she has appeared as a featured artist on quite a few songs this year, with musicians like Doja Cat and Isaiah Rashad, this is her first solo release of 2021.

In true SZA fashion, she teased a demo version of the song in August on an anonymous SoundCloud account. The track was originally released along with two others “Joni” and “Nightbird”.

It seemed as though SZA had no intention of officially releasing the song until it became one of the latest viral sounds on TikTok and garnered a lot of fan attention.

The song comes almost a year after SZA’s last release of “Good Days” on Christmas of 2020.

It did not take long for the track to become a huge success. Upon its release it debuted at #1 on the United States Spotify and Apple Music streaming songs chart. It also broke the record for the most streamed R&B song by a female artist on Apple Music in its first week.

SZA

The track is full of SZA’s usual openness and vulnerability. She details the end and emotional aftermath of a bad relationship over the electronic R&B instrumentals.

The honesty of her lyrics is presumably what made this song so successful, even before its official release.

SZA "Good Days"

… so when’s the album dropping?!

SZA is notorious for leaving fans wanting more. For now, we are patiently waiting for another album release. The singer has not released an album since she came out with “CTRL” in 2017.

In November, a fake announcement was spread that SZA would be releasing an album later on in the month, but the artist quickly cleared up that rumour.

Fans remain optimistic that the “Love Galore” singer will release a new album in the near future.

Until then, listen to “I Hate U” available on all major streaming platforms.
