SiR Takes Us on a Somber Ride Through Inglewood

One of the lesser known artists on Top Dawg Entertainment, SiR has been slowly but surely making himself known on the label full of rap artists as an R&B singer. SiR’s upbringing is a familiar one in the world of R&B as he comes from a family of gospel singers, however it was the production on his TDE debut November that really caught my ear. The exceptional quality should come as no surprise, SiR holds a degree in recording arts and began his career as an engineer for Tyrese.

While the critically acclaimed album November was a seducing love note to the women of his desire, Chasing Summer details the up and downs of the relationship once things get serious. Coming in at 14 tracks and 45 minutes, from the intro and the album’s only single “Hair Down”, SiR lets you know from the jump he’s just trying to be himself without facing any scrutiny. Kendrick Lamar provides assistance but switches flows to his more sensual side that we’ve seen on tracks like “Loyalty”.

The rest of the track list jumps from upbeat songs like “Touch Down” to melancholy tunes such as “The Recipe”. With features from artist like Lil Wayne (“Lucy’s Love”), Sabrina Claudio (“That’s Why I Love You”), Jill Scott (“Still Blue”), Smino (“LA Lisa”) and Zacari (“Mood”), almost every feature seems to fit cohesively. My personal favorites from the album are the previously mentioned “That’s Why I Love You” and “Mood”, Sabrina Claudio’s voice sounds like how warm caramel on vanilla ice cream tastes. Zacari, a fellow TDE signee, (who may even be less known that SiR), proves himself on “Mood”. The duo goes back and forth about always having to match the vibe of your lady, which I agree can be exhausting.

SiR prides himself on being hands on in every process of making music and it shows in the work. I look forward to seeing what else the Inglewood native continues to offer.
