Post Malone Drops New Song “Mourning”

Austin Richard Post, better known as Post Malone, dropped his new song “Mourning” on May 19th, 2023. This song is part of his upcoming album AUSTIN set to drop in late July. The album comes as a surprise, as his last album, Twelve Carat Toothache, was released less than a year ago. The first single from AUSTIN, titled “Chemical”, dropped April 2023 to a lukewarm response. Despite the recent turn around in albums, Post Malone expresses great pride in his next big project.

this whole deal has been one of the most challenging rewarding, and exciting records i’ve worked on.

With this single, we get a new look into the new and improved Post Malone. Will the song be good, or will it become another failed attempt at a comeback for Posty?

Post Malone is happy… right?

“Mourning” opens with a bright instrumental. However, the lyrics deal with intense topics such as alcoholism and the struggle of fame. Lyrically, this song feels like familiar territory for Post Malone. His album Hollywood’s Bleeding especially deals with these themes throughout. However, the dichotomy between the lyrics and productions is a bit too drastic to be interesting.

Many artists like Lorde or Halsey have mastered this concept. Albums like Sunflower use summery production to mask the themes of death, healing, and a person’s connection to nature. Unfortunately, Post Malone’s lyricism isn’t up to par for this kind of song. Opting to use direct lyrics rather than metaphor, the song reads as Austin complaining and not exploring the depths of these issues. This can make the song seem superficial.

Should fans be concerned for the new album?

Album Announcement from Post Malone

With AUSTIN coming out in the next few months, the singles have some fans (like myself) concerned for the album. Post Malone’s past albums are made up of hit after hit, and his singles we’re usually the standouts. Past examples of chosen singles include bangers like “Rockstar” or mid-tempo pop songs like “Circles“. Nearly every single pre-Twelve Carat Toothache has been successful. His last album marked the first massive dip in sales. Despite the lack of commercial success, I believe it contains some of his most personal and best work to date. While “Mourning” and “Chemical” might not be the best start to this era, this album should have songs hidden in the track list that stand out. Hopefully, with Post Malone in a better place when recording the album, this should translate into a great project.
