KPOP group NewJeans dropped their latest single “Zero” in early April 2023. NewJeans is just like their name alludes to, new! The group debuted in 2022 and are still without a debut album. The song comes after their two-song mini release titled NewJeans ‘OMG’, released at the beginning of 2023. Before then, their discography was made up of just a handful of singles. With each release comes a new opportunity to understand NewJeans and their artistic vision. This release is no exception, providing listeners a new chapter into their world.
Review
The song opens with notes alternating between ears to create a dynamic start. The kicks come in, with a surprisingly upbeat tempo, pairing nicely with the notes. From there, the beat comes in with a progressive tempo, leaving out heavy bass or pop tempos with a focus on rhythm. The lead up to the chorus comes with a surprisingly low-tempo chorus; one with a more stripped back sound, and emphasis on the vocals. The lyrics, when translated, describe the spark occurring when you first meet someone you know you’ll like. The chorus contains references to Coca-Cola, and a refrain telling this person that they don’t ever want to be apart. The songs infectious melody and unique production practically guarantee new listens, and it shows promise for more NewJeans music.
The Future of NewJeans
If there’s one word to describe NewJeans, it would be unique. Each song from them sees the group going in a different direction. This trend is definitely set with this new release. Everything presented in “Zero” works, from the stylistic production to the catchy songwriting. Despite debuting not long ago, I see a future with NewJeans as the next KPOP it-girls.
