Melissa’s Monthly Playlist: September 2019

For the past couple of years, my favorite hobby has been raking through the Spotify “New Music Friday” and “Discover Weekly” playlists to find my new favorite songs and artists. From my findings, I usually assemble a playlist chock-full of fresh music to listen to. It started as a weekly thing for me, but evolved to be something bigger: a collection of songs for the month.

Creating these playlists is something I’ve genuinely enjoyed doing these past couple of years, as they’ve helped me expand my musical horizons.

I started sharing them on my personal instagram about a year ago, and quickly received messages from a lot of friends asking for more. I always look forward to hearing everybody’s responses; so much so that it has prompted me to create a new series here on Mic Drop…

Say hello to “Melissa’s Monthly Playlist!”

This is my musical diary; something I am able to use to look back on moments of each year so fondly. My hope is that this not only helps you discover some new music, but also encourages you to share your own findings. There’s always more music worth discovering.

So, let’s get to it! I’m so exited to share this month’s findings with you all, and could go on and on about ‘em for a while (don’t test me!). Instead of talking your ears off, I’ll guide you through some shining stars of the playlist!

Maya Hawke

The stars of Netflix’s hit show Stranger Things have proven to be talented in all avenues, especially music. So, it should come as no surprise that Maya Hawke, who plays Robin Buckley, has released a couple of indie tracks that are a breath of fresh air. Listen in the car with the windows down. Feel the breeze. They’re perfect for it.

EARTHGANG

This spectacular duo hails from Atlanta, Georgia and were signed to J. Cole’s Dreamville Records in 2017. EARTHGANG’s sound? Absolutely uncut, wild, and melodic; reminiscent of Atlanta trailblazers OutKast. They released their record MIRRORLAND this past week, and it’s been highly regarded by fans and artists alike.

Electric Guest

Whether alone or at the side of pop icons like Carly Rae Jepsen, Los Angeles duo Electric Guest know how to drop hits. This week, they’re back with another called “More.” “More” is a track brimming with positivity and hope. The single was released ahead of the release of their album KIN, due out October 18th of this year.

Happy discovering!
