Is Music Therapy The Future of Medicine?

As of September 28th, 2019 Forbes announced that music does indeed heal the mind according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH is an organization currently researching the effects music has on our brains. The institute announced that a stunning $20 million dollars is being commited to figure out the essential question… Does music heal you? With the combined efforts of music therapists and neuroscientists, researchers will be able to potentially connect the positive effects of music on the brain.

Disorders including Parkinson’s disease, PTSD, and strokes have been of peak interest to scientists as they are looking to test music’s healing capacity. I myself am especially eager to discover their findings, music can be so much more than just sounds to the ear. It is no secret that music can change emotions and improve someones day, but applying it in a medicinal and therapeutic manner for patients could lead to something huge for the future of music.

We are fortunate enough to live in a time where neuroscience can be used to research music’s effect on the mind. Being able to sustain someones life using music could be the big next step in medical history. Excited is an understatement.
