Are Remixes The Key To Staying On Top Of The Charts?

Last week, SZA blessed us with a stellar remix to her song “Kill Bill’ featuring Doja Cat. It is a fantastic remix that helps expand on the story of the original. Not to mention, it helped SZA to secure her first-ever number-one song! This is not an uncommon occurrence in the Billboard Top 10. When a song gets a lot of traction, artists try to capitalize on that hype by releasing new versions of their songs. This can come in various forms, whether the one-off version like The Weeknd with “Save Your Tears” or constant remixes like Lil Nas X did with the record-breaking “Old Town Road.”

But what if all the songs in the Billboard Top 10 had remixes to them? Let’s take a look at the most recent list and see what we are working with.

This question is already answered for half of the list. The aforementioned “Kill Bill,” new entry “Princess Diana,” another banger “Calm Down,” late bloomer “Die for You,” and “Boys A Liar, Pt. 2” have all gotten the remix treatment already.

So, we shall review the remaining five songs that have yet to get a big rework and give it to them! This list will be more wishlist oriented, so all the choices will likely not happen. However, the choices I made are the ones I think would be the most fun to see, and that would fit the best. Enough beating around the bush, though. Let’s get into it.

‘Search & Rescue’ By Drake feat. Lil Yachty

First, we have the number nine entry in the top 10, Drake’s most recent single, “Search & Rescue.” Despite Drake and Lil Yachty’s close relationship, they have only ever joined forces on one song. Sure, Yachty has helped produce for Drake in the past, just as recently as on Her Loss. However, it is time they traded a few more bars. This song would be the perfect platform for that.  Drake and Yachty already have phenomenal chemistry, and this song’s melodic trap vibe is the ideal thing Yachty could hop onto. Not to mention, the producer SADPONY has been a frequent collaborator of Yachty in the past. It seems like a match made in heaven.

‘CREEPIN’ By Metro Boomin, The Weeknd, & 21 Savage feat. Future

Next, we have the smash collaboration from hip-hop and R&B’s biggest stars, our number six entry, “Creepin.” Technically, it already had a remix released about a month ago. It features rapper Diddy who happened to be featured on the remix of the original song “Creepin,” which interpolates on the chorus. It was a fine enough rework. However, it never made waves or helped the song in the long run. My dream feature would have instead been Mr. Hendrix himself: Future. Future would have fit well into the darker dramatic atmosphere of the song. Infidelity stories have always been his bread and butter.

‘ELLA BAILA SOLA’ By Eslabon Armado & Peso Pluma feat. Bad Bunny

The first regional Mexican song ever to hit the top five, “Ella Baila Sola” by Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma, is third on this list. It is crazy to see how the regional Mexican music subgenre has taken over the charts in the last few months. I am so happy to see stuff like this constantly happening with various genres and cultures. Bad Bunny is a product of this as well. He rose into stardom off of the enormous reggaeton wave that occurred a few years ago. He most recently hopped onto a regional Mexican song with the Texas-based group Grupo Frontera. Here, he proved he could fit this type of sound well. It is only a matter of time until Bad Bunny collaborates with Peso Pluma.

‘Flowers’ By Miley Cyrus feat. Taylor Swift

Second to last is one of the biggest songs of the year, “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus. When Cyrus first announced Endless Summer Vacation, numerous “leaked” tracklists were floating around. These promised a handful of interesting collaborations, from Harry Styles and FLETCHER to Wiz Khalifa and Swae Lee. One such tracklist mentioned a collaboration I knew was too good to be true: Taylor Swift. This was quite unlikely to happen, as Taylor is pretty conservative with her collaborations. Although, it made me wonder what something between them might sound like. That made this decision for the list so much easier. “Flowers” subject matter is something Taylor is no stranger to, as she loves throwing shots at past lovers and showing that you can be happy on your own. They could do something special here.

‘Last Night’ By Morgan Wallen feat. Young Thug

Lastly, we have our smash hit country song, “Last Night” by Morgan Wallen, at number two. No matter how you feel about the man or his music, seeing the success and numbers he has been pulling recently is impressive. His most recent album, One Thing At A Time, sold 500,000 copies in the first week! A song from that album called “180 (Lifestyle)” interpolates the trap classic of the same name by the hip-hop supergroup Rich Gang. One of the main men in that group is none other than Young Thug himself. He already has plenty of experience in the country genre, which would make him a good fit for this song. His 2017 album Beautiful Thugger Girls was heavily country influenced, and he was also featured on a remix of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road.”

I hope you all enjoyed that article! It was a lot of fun to put together. Little experiments like these are always entertaining for me and the rest of y’all. Let me know if you have any other big song remixes you think would fit well! Otherwise, see you next week.
