From Screen to Sound: Florence Pugh Lights Up the Music Scene

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last few years, I’m sure you have heard of Florence Pugh. She’s quite literally a movie star, a world class chef, and now she’s transitioning to the music world too… WHAT CAN’T SHE DO?! To accompany her new feature film A Good Person, actress Florence Pugh recently released her first soundtracks as a singer-songwriter.

The British actress has composed and performed two tracks. One of which is a melancholy piano-driven song titled “The Best Part.” The other is a self-critical song titled “I Hate Myself.” In the movie, her character, Allison, a talented singer whose career was derailed by tragedy, performs each of these songs.

Zach Braff, who was previously Pugh’s boyfriend, wrote and produced the film. The movie features lots of other big names in Hollywood including the legendary Morgan Freeman as a co-star. Some big names in music have gotten involved with the project as well, tracks by the Velvet Underground and Fenne Lily are included on the soundtrack. The track was composed by Bryce Dessner of the National. He is also well-known for his work on the themes of movies such as The Revenant and C’mon C’mon.

I wrote these songs for my character Allison in the movie to perform, but also as a way to process and digest her mindset and her low headspace.” “It was unbelievably helpful and hard; I wanted a song to reflect the self-hatred she had for herself in a way that the audience can truly understand

Florence Pugh is proving that she is more than just an actress in A Good Person. Given the actress’s wide range of capabilities, this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

The film A Good Person was met with a generally favorable reception from audiences and critics alike. Throughout the course of the movie, Pugh’s character, Allison, performs several piano pieces. She also sings duets with her fiance Nathan at their engagement celebration at the beginning and end of the movie. During the time that Allison spends in rehabilitation, she composes new tracks with lyrics that perfectly capture how she is currently feeling as well as everything that she has been and experienced throughout the course of the movie.

Although this is the first time Pugh and Braff have collaborated on a film together, it is not the first time that Pugh has performed while in character. A Good Person is the film that represents this first collaboration between the two. She also has a singing role in the movie “Don’t Worry Darling,” in which Olivia Wilde stars in. Pugh collaborated with her co-star and vocalist Harry Styles on the important song “With You All the Time” from Don’t Worry Darling. Pugh provided the main singing for the song, while Styles was responsible for the keyboard accompaniment.

Florence Pugh has been performing since she was a toddler. She’s also performed as a teenager, she would upload cover versions of songs to her YouTube account. Some of these tracks included “Wonderwall” by Oasis. Pugh is a talented musician who is able to perform, play the keyboard, and the instrument. Her prowess at the keyboard is on full exhibit throughout the entirety of A Good Person.

PUGH Actually wrote the two songs she sang in the film

Florence Pugh is talented not only as an actress, singer, and composer, but also in these areas individually. Pugh put her words to paper and wrote “The Best Part” as well as “I Hate Myself” for A Good Person. The tracks were made available to the public for the first time as part of the soundtrack. They also served as the occasion on which she made her debut as a singer-songwriter.

In an interview with The Guardian, Pugh reveals that the experience of composing the final tune for A Good Person was both “helpful” and “hard” for her because she wanted to “process and digest her mindset.” In the end, the performer desired for “I Hate Myself” to communicate the self-hatred that her character felt toward themselves. Throughout the movie, Allie deals with this challenge, and the music serves as a culmination of her emotions regarding it.

Pugh performs “The Best Part” at the beginning of A Good Person, deliriously ecstatic that she’s marrying Nathan, and then “I Hate Myself” in the final act of the film, which is a lot more vulnerable and self-reflective than the previous song she performed. Pugh’s vocal shifts to accommodate the vastly dissimilar atmosphere and lyrical content of each song, and the two tracks couldn’t be any more different from one another.

In addition to her role as a singer in the film A Good Person, Pugh has also provided background vocals for her brother Toby Sebastian’s single “Midnight.” Toby Sebastian is a celebrity on the HBO series Game of Thrones.
